Loveland and Keystone are usually the first to open--they have a race to see which will be first every year. When they open though there isn't much snow and it is only one run. My wife and I like Loveland--there are never any lines and it is closer to Denver. They usually open about the first week of November, but I would wait until at least mid December most years. There is also free skiing at Crested Butte from Nov. 25 to Dec. 15 (I think those are the dates).

Arapaho Basin was the first resort to open last year around the end of October. I would recomend going to Copper Mountain for family skiing. They have naturally divided terrain so you know you never will end up on a run that is way to hard, or a really slow green run that will lead to one of those really slow chairlifts.

Out here in VT they open the day after Thanksgiving. Some times earlyer if there is good snow, but always advertise for that date. So i am guessing at that date or earlier for the western part of the USA due to bigger mountains.
