I got them as a gift four years ago and I wasn't in to skiing but I want to go this year. Is there anything i need to do to get them ready for the winter? They have been sitting in a bag and they do have a little rust on the edges. Thanks!

In addition to a full tune and leaving the wax on the base I suggest you do two other things:

1. Tape the edges of the skis with electrical tape. It will keep the edges from oxidizing while you have the skis in storage. When you take the tape off for ski season, you might have a little residue from the tape. You can clean that off easily with rubbing alcohol. I keep skis I don't use often taped and I never have rust on the edges.

2. Make sure your boots are fitting correctly. Even if your foot has stopped growing your foot may have changed over the past four years due to things like falling arches, bunions, etc. I know my own foot has changed shape over the past two years due to the shoes I tend to wear now, versus the shoes I used to wear. Most ski shops have the necessary tools and items to get you fitted correctly however if you have developed special problems or just want to get fitted exactly, then I suggest visiting a custom bootfitter. Bottom line is make sure the boots fit well. Your skis can be tuned out the wazoo but if your boots feel like junk you won't want to ski at all.

Hmmm.. the edge rust won't be too good. What I would recommend you do is take them into a ski store and ask them for a full tune, but tell them not to scrape the wax. They will know what you mean. This will leave a think layer of wax which will protect the ski base until the winter. When you want to ski, take the skis back and they should scrape them and brush them for you.

That's pretty much all you gotta do. Have fun on the slopes. Skiing is the world's greatest sport!

Take them to a ski shop and have them serviced and waxed.
