Utah's snow is known as "The Greatest Snow on Earth". It even says so on Utah's license plates. Skiers from near and far come in droves every year to play on unique, light, fluffy "powder".

What makes the snow so great? Geography!

"The Wasatch Mountains, which sit on the eastern edge of the Salt Lake Valley, receive the powdery snow because of a fortunate series of geographic wonders. Located in the western United States, Utah storms are born out over the Pacific Ocean. In the winter these storms are heavy with precipitation, but on their way eastward, these storms don't find any significant barriers until they reach the 150 mile long Wasatch Range, a sub-range of the Rockies, which has peaks of over 12,000 feet.

"Before the storms hit the Wasatch Range, they cross the largest lake--in area--west of the Mississippi: the Great Salt Lake. The Great Salt Lake covers an average area of 1,700 square miles. But this size can be deceiving. The Great Salt Lake is very shallow with a maximum depth of 35 feet. Thus, a large surface area and shallow waters (heats up faster in the sun) allows the clouds passing overhead to suck up water vapor like a sponge.

"Finally, because of Utah's dry climate (second driest state in the nation) the dry air makes the snow fluffy. I don't understand all the chemistry behind it, but these factors make for great, white powder."

You need to go to any western ski resort. Whistler and Vail are the best by size alone. That being said i would rather be at Jackson hole on a big powder day then any where else. From Indiana so should be able to drive to the Denver area in around 14hrs. the summit county ski resorts are all very nice. I takes till around the 2nd or 3rd week of January to guarantee great snow cover but its different every year. That one big dump can change the entire early season for a resort.

The Powder Highway, British Columbia Canada.

You want a challenge? Check out Fernie......The powder highway consists of Fernie plus catskiing operations at Powder Cowboy and Island Lake Lodge. Nearby Castle Mountain is notoriously gnarly. Awesome powder, genuine small town feel and wild and free skiing and snowboarding. For a loop from Calgary, go Calgary-Castle Mtn-Fernie--Golden (Kicking Horse)-Lake Louise-Banff (Sunshine)-Calgary. Kimberly and Fairmont Hot Springs are also en-route but wouldn't offer a challenge. Panorama and Jasper could also be included.

Nearest airport Cranbrook, BC, 1 hour, Kalispell, MT, 2 hours, Calgary Int'l 3.5 hours.

Snow starts mid-Oct, resorts open late Nov-mid Dec. Check out last minute deals for early Dec skiing, follow the snow reports online, often amazing conditions and empty slopes.

Roll on winter, I'm already dreaming of snow!!!

i useto live in illinois before i moved to montana and ya the skiing pretty much sucks ther cuz its so flat so ever since i was 3 we went out for a week in montana to go skiing ya its kinda pricy but its soo worth it montana has awesome skiing and boarding. it can snow anytime in montana but i think right after thanksgiving pretty much all the resorts open the best time personally is december or febuary but it depends cuz were in a drought. last year right at the end of the season (in like march or early april) it was sooo awesome it was like 20 degrees which is a little warm but u dont hav to wear u coat and tons of powder i would suggest big mountain ski resort right out of kalispell montana

aspen colorado is supposed to have great slopes, and so does Montana. I love in wisconsin, and i'm on the ski club. a couple of my favorite places we go to are granite peak and the porcupine mountains. if you go to the porkies make sure you go to the CAT trails (expert only). snow comes late november if lucky.

Vail, Colorado is in my opinion the best skiing in the states. You might try something in Europe if you ever go over there
