The cheapest places are Green Mountain Club cabins and shelters. Of course you'll have to hike in a mile or so and hike out a mile or so each day...but they are FREE. You'll also freeze your butt off using the outhouse!

You can save on your tix and instead spend the green on a good hotel if you plan your trip right. Hit Sugarbush on $5 day and Mad River Glen on $3 day. What you save on a lift-ticket you can spend on a nice place to crash.

There are hostels near Jay and Stowe/Smuggs areas. They are very reasonable. No frills places (except the Round Hearth in Stowe...they have a hot tub.)

Bolton Valley usually gives away hotel rooms mid-week. I haven't dealt with them in a few years so maybe things have changed, but they were usually desperate for mid-week bussiness.

The Summit Lodge (NOT the Grand Summit) at Killington has reasonable rates. I've stayed there, but my Killington tix are usually comped, so I drop a bit more $$$ on the room. There are a truckload of hotels down the road in Rutland. The Econo Lodge is the cheapest...no frills. Swing by the Back Home Again Cafe...the religious hippies who run the place have a hostel and might let you crash. They put up AT Thru-hikers in the summer, I don't know what their policy is on skiers.

If hitting Stratton/Bromley/Magic (pray they open again) stay AWAY from anything in Stratton. Way too much $$$. The Sun Lodge at Bromley usually has ski & stay for $55-$60. They throw in breakfast too usually and it's slopeside! Manchester has some good motel deals. Hit them up after President's weekend and most of the innkeepers will cut you a deal. Especially mid-week. It's a 20 minute ride to Stratton from Manchester...15 minutes to Bromley.

I have skied at Killington and stayed in Rutland where the prices for motels and food are reasonable. It is about 1/2 hour from the slopes. I also have stayed in Montpelier, which is nice little town. I think it is about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes to Stowe, Mad River and Sugarbush. I understand the condos at Jay Peak are reasonable if you are looking for something very close to the slopes (and I think Jay is the best ski area in the east). I have heard of people staying in Albany and Lake George for a good price, but now the slopes are an hour plus away. I have never tried it but you might be able to find reasonable accommodations in Burlington and access Bolton/Stowe.

One other thing. Hotel prices drop right after St Patricks day and ski conditions are still at their prime. If you can hold out you can get some great deals late into the season and conditions are usually good through April.

Hope this helps.

Watch the snow pre - Christmas. Generally lodging is less costly prior to the Holiday season and as an added bonus it tends to be less crowded. There are reasonably priced places to stay in Rutland, I used to stay at a place called Green Mont Motel, its still there, phone is 802- 775 - 2575. Down the street from it there is a good place for breakfast, I think its called Stewards. You are about 20 minutes from Pico, a little further from Killington and about 30-40 minutes from Okemo. There is also a place called Happy Trails Motel in Ludlow by Okemo where you can get good deals at times.

There are a lot of great skiing resorts in Vermont, finding the one that fits your budget can be hard. Burke mountain which is located in Lyndoville, is a fun place to go and have reasonable rates. Other places to consider are Jay Peak, Bretton Woods (in NH, a short drive from VT), sugarbush, Ascutney, Bromley, Haystack Club, Magic Mountain, Mount Snow, Okemo, Stratton. Thease are just some of the great places to stay. Check them out and see if they fit your style and wallet.

I live about 30 mins from the major sky areas in Vermont, so what I would personally do is stay in Burlington. Burlington is good city to stay in (And you can find some really nice hotels for really cheap) Or on Shelburne Road in Shelburne. The highway is right there and it takes you to the exit with the areas.

BUT, if you want to be really close to the ski areas, there's little hotels and motels on the same mountains because they know people want to stay inexpensive and be close XP But, you probably would have to reserve very early because everyone will be wanting to stay in these places.

Have fun and good luck :]

I don't recommend Killington at all. It's big, blows a lot of snow, but it draws every city slicker from Boston and NYC.

I suggest going further north, staying in Burlington, and skiing any number of the northern resorts such as Snow, Mad River Glen, Bolton Valley, or Jay Peak. Those are all great places to ride!

Killington is probably the best skiing in VT. As for lodging, it probably isn't cheap but its worth it
