Proclamation of National Thanksgiving

George Washington

City of New York, October 3, 1789

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor, and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks.

Was she considered an ideal for Jewish women to aspire to, or something else? I have only heard the Christian interpretations. Anti-Semites, stay away.

The old testament just mentions sheol where everyone went:

"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, [2] for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going"

We see in Matthew 17:1-7 an account.
The Lord took Peter James and John his brother with Him to a high mountain. The Lord was transfigured before them, His face shining, His garments became as white as light.
Moses and Elijan appeared and conversed with the Lord.
Peter then, made a proposal to make three tents. One for the Lord, one for Moses and Elijah
While Peter was uttering this a bright cloud overshadowed them and the Voice of the Father said.. that This was His Son. the Beloved in Whom He has found His delight.. Hear HIM!
The 3 disciples were afraid. The Lord touched them and told them not to be afraid. When they raised their eyes they saw ONLY JESUS and the other two were not with Him.

Peter's proposal brought out something that I think is really crucial.
He wanted to put Moses ( Law) and Elijah ( Prophets) on the same level as Christ, making the law and prophets equal with Christ. These two are only a testimony of Christ ..

If so, when did you convert and why? Or have you always been an atheist?

As for those that are not atheists, why do you disagree with these views?

Can someone have an opinion which does not accord to generally religious, but specifically Christian, belief without it being called 'hating' or 'prejudiced'?

Furthermore, if you ask for justification of belief, is that condemning or is it fair?

Thomas Jefferson was our third president, and he wrote the Declaration of Independence, there's your quick history lesson ;)

He was also a deist, which is about a half inch from atheism. Numerous times he wrote harsh words against organized religion and Christianity in particular.

Can you guys remember Jefferson the next time you feel inclined to say this is your nation, your Christian nation, and that atheists are stupid unpatriotic fools?
