This reference is completely astrological. The three wise men refer to the three stars in Orion's belt. On December 24th, they allign with the brightest star in the east, Sirius, and point to the place of the sunrise on December 25th. Thus, the three Kings follow the star in the east to the birth of the sun.

Because they knew from studying the Old Testament writings that there would be a sign in the heavens signifying the birth of the Saviour, and when they saw the bright star shining they came to find Him so they could worship Him. They were very wise indeed, because after they found Jesus and having been warned in a dream by God not to return to Herod with the news, they departed back to their city using a different route. God bless you!!!

The Bible specifically mentions three gifts, so somewhere along the line,. it became three wise men.

You talking about the 3 wise guys with gifts from afar? Cause it's tradition. But I think there may have been an entourage. Except that 3 gifts were given, gold, frankensense and mirr, so it seems reasonable to believe that there were 3 wise guys carrying the 3 gifts.

Because of the three types of gifts mentioned, gold, frankincense and myrrh. Somewhere, someone got the big idea that the mention of 3 types of gifts meant 3 gifts, thus 3 men.

Not terribly observant. But, it is what it is. Not accurate, but no real harm.

I don't know the exact answer to the question, but the reason why they were called wise was not because of anything that the Bible holds up as virtuous but what the world of mankind hold up as virtuous.

It comes from the number of gifts presented. (Gold, frankincense and myrrh.) How many magi (wise men) came to see Christ after His birth is unknown.
