about "loving thy neighbor", prohibiting murder, etc. were routinely dismissed as "taken out of context"?

could it be simply that the real context of the supposedly immutable word of God is simply the current mores of the society it is read in?

Wikipedia estimates the human population in the third millineum BCE to be around 30 million. Therefore in the flood, Genesis 7:23,
"And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark. "

Then you have another 1000 in Gen 19:24, as he hails down fire and brimstone.

He kills Lots wife for looking, Er for just being wicked, and Onan for having a wa-nk

Previous to Christianity there were Judaism, Greek, Roman and Nordic mythology, the Celts, the Zarathustra, the Vedas, Buddhism, Confucianism, Zoroastrianism and a lot more.

- The idea of a savoir is not unique.
- The idea of someone being the savior running aroung doing miracles and preaching, is not unique.
- Many of the stories in the bible have similarities with the ones from India or the far east(China, Japan, Indonesia, etc).
- The system of worship and practise can be found in the older religions as well.
- The moral and ethics can be found in the older religions as well.
- Even the idea of one God, can be found in religions older than Christianity....

What elements are unique to christianity that cannot be found in any of the elder religions?

A friend of mine who's from mainland china almost got sucked into a cult recently. Fortunately, i managed to convince her to stop attending meetings, and she's now afraid to ever go back. However, i feel i owe her a better explanation of what cults are, as she doesn't seem to understand them herself, aside from that she doesn't want to be involved in them. Does anyone have any online resources that i could use to explain it to her, preferably in chinese?

Matthew 6:5-6 makes it pretty clear what Jesus' thoughts on public and congregational prayer are. Yes, Paul said different, but this is just another example of Christians really being Paul's followers, and not all that interested in what Jesus had to say.

Is that possible? I was brought up in an atheist family so ive been taught to believe god aint real.

However, sometimes i want to believe in a god, i mean... what if God IS REAL? I guess im more agnostic than atheist because i dont deny god nor do i believe in him... but that doesnt mean i cant lean either way - id like to look deeper into Christianity.

However is that possible? I am now 18, brought up atheist, can i be converted or is it to late? Think of it this way - 18 years of athiesim will leave me always doubting certain aspects of christianity. Most christians were kinda born and raised christian, but u dont hear of fully grown people converting. Because of this, i may never be able to fully accept god because it is mentally impossible for me to believe in him 100% from the way my brain has been wired from childhood by my parents and education, my way of analysing information (such as the bible) is concrete in my athiest bred brain.

So how would you rescue an ex athiest?
