about "loving thy neighbor", prohibiting murder, etc. were routinely dismissed as "taken out of context"?

could it be simply that the real context of the supposedly immutable word of God is simply the current mores of the society it is read in?

I think often the crusades are taken out of the context of history and what was going on then much more than bible passages taken out of context. Look at History and what the Muslims had done, murdering millions who would not convert, and in that context something needed to be done.

I am not saying that the Crusades was the best way to handle it, but as I said, something needed to be done and that is what society at that time decided.

the crusades were meant to stop the Muslims who were destroying the holy land....murdering millions of people, just like is done today, when given a chance.

you might want to investigate what the Muslims were doing rather than focus all your criticism on the defending group

in war, people typically get killed.

Then as today ALL people interpret the Bible the way it backs up their personal beliefs.

People are and have always been basically the same.
