A friend of mine who's from mainland china almost got sucked into a cult recently. Fortunately, i managed to convince her to stop attending meetings, and she's now afraid to ever go back. However, i feel i owe her a better explanation of what cults are, as she doesn't seem to understand them herself, aside from that she doesn't want to be involved in them. Does anyone have any online resources that i could use to explain it to her, preferably in chinese?

Just hand him a bible and say, "here's an example of a cult."

I would start with the description in Wikipedia, and then follow up with some specific ones that went bad, such as Jonestown and Heaven's Gate. But I would also try the Wikipedia article on Brainwashing, and again follow up with the references provided.

One problem is that some religious organizations that are not considered cults because they have a lot of people nonetheless use many of the same psychological tricks as the "cults" as the media defines them. They will cut you off from everyone you knew before your conversion, they will use sleep deprivation to weaken your cognitive capabilities, they will use many of the same techniques employed by stage hypnotists.

I'm not good at looking up things on You Tube because I don't have a user account with them. But I remember some very interesting ones where a British stage hypnotist told Christians he could do "instant conversions" and demonstrated it most convincingly. All he had to do was induce a state of mild hypnosis in the audience, and use suggestion to relate normal responses to the Hand of God.

As to finding these resources in Chinese, good luck! Maybe Babelfish can help.

There is ONE RESOURCE.... The Word of GOD....!

A " CULT " can simply be Described as A GROUP... Pretending to BE RELIGIOUS..... that Does NOT... hold to the Complete Authority of .... The Word of GOD... As Jesus said in Matthew 4:4 & Luke 4:4..!

Generally... The Cult.... DOES NOT HOLD... to the Biblical Teaching that JESUS IS GOD.... As the Holy Scriptures Say HE IS !

You may get her Free Bible Software... that she can download by herself.... www.e-sword.net [ not my site ] where she can get the BIBLE... in her Language.
