Ok, so a recent question asked who wrote genesis(but I put it more politely)...and an answerer said "ignorant sheep herders"...

What are they ignorant of? I could call you an ignorant non-sheep herder...I mean, do you know what percent protein a sheep needs? Do you know how many months a sheep carries the lamb for? Do you know the different types of sheep and how to judge whether a sheep is a good breeder or not? Do you what disease a sheep has just by looking at it, and then know which medicine to give it?

I didn't think so...so who is the ignorant one in sheep herding? Sheep herders or non-sheep herders?

Let's face it, if "the bible says so" is the only criteria in play, that's a pretty weak argument, particularly for those who don't happen to ascribe inerrancy to the text. So please, let's look at this logically:

1. Historicity? Northern European heathenry predates Judaism by several thousand years in the actual, *archeaological* record.
2. Power for good? The Norse godhs were looked to for fertility, prosperity, good harvests and luck for thousands of years . . . don't you think someone might have noticed, in all that time, if it wasn't working?
3. Devotion of believers? Thor in particular was held in great affection by the Folk.
4. Martyrs? Got 'em. Read up on the bloody conversion of Northern Europe sometime.
5. Creation myth? Yep, got one. No more *factual* than anyone else's, but it teaches our core cultural truths, which is what creation myths do.
6. Ability to change lives? Yep, does that.
7. Personal relationship? Direct spiritual gnosis counts, right?

I'm not seeing it.

Christians know every medical procedure that God hates, the forms of medical research that he hates, which peoples' sexuality he hates, etc. etc. ad nauseum.
They also know all his loves. (Puppies, babies, Faux News, bombing infidels, etc.)

But not one single Christian can tell us when Jesus is coming back. Why is that?

It really does matter to an extent what other people think of you.(I used to not believe that but my mother said so).
So how important is it that other Christians approve of you and your beliefs or your manner of life?

just a passing thought about what it could be like; as there are some great takes on religion in science fiction, I was wondering if SF was a genre discouraged by the Church, etc, or not.

A friend recently lost his boyfriend to suicide. The boyfriend wanted to spare his religious family the grief of having a son/brother who was homosexual. My question is this: would you rather have a living gay child or a dead one?

Hey, I've got a question that I thought was pretty straight forward to answer, but I find I'm having trouble getting an answer. I have read from Matthew and most of Romans in the NT. There seems to be a lot of references to us being saved by Jesus and being able to get into heaven because of Him... yet even after all this reading, I still don't understand HOW this works. Why did Jesus need to die for us to get into heaven and/or be saved? Aren't people that died before Jesus (who were good people and followed everything in the OT) going to heaven? Why was Jesus' death needed?

And if it was needed, what of the people that died before his death? And if it was needed, why? Why did Jesus have to DIE? Please don't take this like I'm challenging anyone or anything... I'm genuinely curious and would like to know. I feel I know nothing if I can't answer this simple question. Also, any Bible verses that will help clarift WHY would be nice. Thanks :)

I think ethics are rules and standards set by society, and morals have more to do with your integrity and God. What do you think?

I've found teaching against prostitutes, adultery and lust, but these are very different than pre-marital sex in a loving, trusting adult relationship. Similarly, there are verses that say that sexual immorality is wrong, but pre-marital sex is not neccessarily sexual immorality, and there are other Bible verses that speak of this as meaning homosexuality - again, not necessarily applicable in a relationship with pre-marital sex.

Can anyone indicate any Bible verses that teach against it SPECIFICALLY?

Yeah, I noticed that people keep trying to declare the end of the world. Before in like 1998 they said May 3 was the end of the world, yeah. Then of course the year 2000. And now they say that they're sure its 2012, because of the mayan calendar ending then. When that doesn't happen they're just going to have a new date, like no i meant to say er um 2052 is the end of time! Ugh.

What is up with that?

Plus you can't predict when Jesus will come. When he comes no one will know when, not even he knows when as is written. When he comes back you'll know. Some will be sorrowful and so will be joyful.

... what, exactly, is the motivation behind posting confrontational "questions" that are really attacks against Church doctrine? You know the sort:
"Catholics! What does Matthew 6:23 mean -- call no man father?"
"Gotcha this time, CATHOLICS, read this verse!"

Not genuine questions about areas of concern, but thinly disguised preaching against the Church and contempt for its adherents.

What do you gain from this? Are you truly looking for informative responses from Catholics? Because regardless of what you get from us, your "best answer" choice always turns out to be ... surprise ... one from another anti-Catholic that affirms your bias and tells you to keep preachin' it.

I have to tell you, if your purpose is to convert people out of Catholicism, attacking and demeaning what they believe is hardly a good beginning. And in my years as an evangelical, this sort of thing was frowned upon. But we didn't have internet anonymity then, either.

Your thoughts, my brothers?
