Ok, so a recent question asked who wrote genesis(but I put it more politely)...and an answerer said "ignorant sheep herders"...

What are they ignorant of? I could call you an ignorant non-sheep herder...I mean, do you know what percent protein a sheep needs? Do you know how many months a sheep carries the lamb for? Do you know the different types of sheep and how to judge whether a sheep is a good breeder or not? Do you what disease a sheep has just by looking at it, and then know which medicine to give it?

I didn't think so...so who is the ignorant one in sheep herding? Sheep herders or non-sheep herders?

Mooseback, I am a Christian, and no...not all sheep are good for breeding...that yes, I believe in. I pick which ewe will give me the best offspring that spring...I pick one that is big with lots of meat and a wide girth, not one that is crippled or lame.

Give me a break.

Ignorant sheep herders is a way to say that these men did not know about things not directly necessary for survival, nor did they seek knowledge outside of their specific job or frame of reference, which was influenced by religion.

Men living two thousand years ago thought of women as property and had limited knowledge of science, medicine, geography, evolution, biology, dinosaurs, genetics, transportation, crop growing, weather patterns and astronomy. Even though the Greeks showed that the world was a sphere, not everyone had access to knowledge of this sort.

They were ignorant. Why is it a problem to be honest?

Why so defensive about facts?

Look at the Old Testament. It calls for stoning to death for adultery (especially women), homosexuality, and recalcitrant children.

You make a valid point that others miss. I raised farm animals, sheep among them on a small scale too. It is hard work and you need to know plenty to make it profitable.

You left out that they lived in a time where you had to make your own fires gather your own wood and anything else you might need. Plus these "sheep herders" raised up a dynasty that rivaled all those around them and the odds were far far greater against them than they were for our ancestors you remember them "ignorant farmers." You might also remember our people who had greater knowledge had one colony die completely out and another saved by "ignorant Indians."

they weren't ignorant at all. the only ones ignorant are the ones that called the human inspired writers ignorant.

the author of geneses was moses, you know, the one that led an entire nation across the red sea? the man acclaimed by god to be the most humble man on the earth? yeah, that one

good logic too. you'd think the ignorant sheep herders would be fired before they finished a book of the bible

Excellent lead post/question. Everyone is ignorant of something. A shepherd (ie sheep herder) isn't ignorant of sheep but may be ignorant about aviation mechanics....

Jason F -- you refer to people who believe in God as 'weak minded'. I find that interesting. Watch the news with regard to a suicide bomber, for example, and tell me whether they were 'weak minded' when they blew themselves up for their God. As disgusting as I find suicide bombing, the conviction for their God was SO STRONG that they would do that.

A weak minded person is someone who tells themselves they can't do something when they probably can.

The bible was written by men to control men. Which means that the scribes that did the actual writing had to be intelligent enough to spell. The people who told them what to write had to know the old stories and the best way to tell them to control people. The priests/rulers who subsidized the publication and dissemination of the books had to be wise enough to keep their troops loyal and keep their subjects from questioning the validity of the writings.

I think they were saying those people were ignorant in general.
And if your christian you don't believe in breeding. All sheep would be good for breeding because passing down genetic traits is part of evolution.

Not ignorant, just insane, particularly Mass Delusional Paranoid Schizophrenia, all Abrahamic religions are based on the ramblings of a mad-desert man.

the bible was clearly written by men, for men

and the 'revelation' they devulged at the time is quite dated, we now know the earth is not round, the sun does not cross the sky or can be stopped so favorite nation can commit more genocide, or men walking on water or turning water into wine
