Last names usually denoted a person's job, especially in Europe. As times have changed, pronunciations have changed, meanings have changed, all sorts of stuff.
For example, when America was bringing people over to Ellis Island, they would have to take names of everyone there. When they couldn't understand a name, they would mispronounce it, misspell it, give them a similar sounding American name, or even just give them random American names to simplify things for themselves.

The story of Adam and Even is fiction. Last names (surnames) have different origins depending on the country your family originally came from. I have some Swedish in my family...and the last name would be according to the male head of the house hold. Alex=Alexson John=Johnson. In England your surname would apt to be your profession. Baker, Hunter, Parson, Spinner, Miller...etc.

If you notice, early in the Bible people had only one name. Later you would see Simon the Tanner, on Straight street. So it follows people got their name from their occupation.

Well my last name is Gardner...which came from Gardener, and in medieval times if I were alive I would be known as Brian the Gardener...

Last names originated centurys ago by your trade.
If you made swords. You became a swordsmith.
If you made horseshoes you became a blacksmith.
If you worked with wood. you became a carpenter.
If you painted. You became a painter.
If you were intellegent enough to write. You became a writer
