Not being facetious, but I'm having trouble understanding why Catholics adhere to a literal interpretation in Luke 22:19 of "this is my body", when Christ distributed the elements of the last supper. I'd like to hear a good explanation of this belief that the elements literally transformed, since so much of Christ's teaching was symbolic, I don't understand why this can't be interpreted as a representation, not an actual transformation.

If Catholics are to take the literal meaning of His words, then would they also have to abide by Matt.5.29? If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell?

(I'm interested to learn more about why Catholics practice this particular teaching. I hope I didn't offend with this question, as this wasn't my intention. Rather I'm just interested in learning.)

Thanks.

I can tell you what is wrong. I can tell you why it's all messed up. People are stupid. They believe in a bad God. The wrong God. Many people, they do not believe in God. They believe in a God of paper and ink, a God of rocks, a God of cruelty and a God of laws. More than that, they believe in a dead God. Why can't they believe in God? Why can't they believe in a God of humans, a God of animals, a God of nature, a God of the universe, a God of kindness, a God of the stars, a God of freedom, and a God of love? Most of all, why can't they believe in a God that is alive? A God of hearts? Why do they have to believe in an outdated, ancient book of irrelevant laws? Why can't they believe in a God who is alive like us, so adapts and tries to do his best? I'm sorry for those who read this speech and do not believe in God. Please post a reply about my rant. But for the rest of you...Why?

Professor Richard Lewontin, a geneticist (and self-proclaimed Marxist), is a renowned champion of neo-Darwinism, and certainly one of the world’s leaders in promoting evolutionary biology. He recently wrote this very revealing comment (the italics were in the original). It illustrates the implicit philosophical bias against Genesis creation regardless of whether or not the facts support it:

in other words, for jewish: are u sure moses is the last prophet, or u have to exclude jesus is a true one?
For christians, are u sure jesus is last prophet or u have to exclude Mohamed is the last one?

Hitchens' point is that moral codes actually preceded the establishment of religion, rather than being created by any religion or even by a deity.

Agree or disagree?

people study when they have homework for school, people study in college, people even study when it comes to taking their driving test, but why do people ask questions without studying or cross referencing themselves when it comes to the bible...anybody can repeat what they heard but intelligence will seek the truth...

Really , the rate @ which they claim converstion is going on for such a long time, we should all be Muslims by now!

A friend of mine who is Orthodox Jewish recently lost a friend of his to cancer and he called me up telling me that some atheist guy at his job asked him if he still believes in God... He was so offended and I do not blame him, if you want to debate the existence of God then fine, there is a time and place for that, and I want to say shame on you to those of you who have done that before, because when someone is hurting you respect there beliefs even if you do not agree, and I'm sure that happens alot because my friend said he heard atheists say that before but he didnt really care until someone had the nerve to do it right after he lost his friend.

I know some rules don't apply anymore, but what are some rules we must follow? We as in Christians. I started from the old testament so i'm pretty much learning what pre-Christians know. I haven't even read up to Christ.

-- then why do they also insist (often in the same breath) that salvation is possible only through faith and not "works"?

In other words, it doesn't matter whether you're a good person or not, all that matters is membership in the club.

This appears to make the whole question of morality utterly irrelevant.

I don't believe in anything except what I can prove. And the only thing that I, or anyone else can prove as known fact(regarding human life), is this:
Humans, all have (or had) parents, of which the mother gave birth to the child. There are absolutely NO KNOWN exceptions to this rule.
Is this statement scientifically true?
If it is not scientific, can any one argue it with their own personall observation?
If not, deos anyone know of any person that has not been born of a woman?

Fundamentalist Christians have captured the media spotlight almost entirely. Indeed, most Christians in the USA are either Fundamentalists or Roman Catholic.

What has happened to the role formerly played by the "Mainstream" Protestant Churches? Why have they effectively abdicated their role in the media and the nation?

Antitheists tend to use reductio ad pessimum (elimination of all but the worst)examples when condemning the "evil of religion" but become quite inflammed when some theists do the same to atheists. Antitheists are rightly annoyed when some theists generalize wrongly by lumping all atheists together with Stalin,Pol Pot,Lenin and Mao,but antitheists constantly make the same wrong generalizations about believers. What do you think? Sweeping generalizations that isolate some facts and ignore the rest are usually falsehoods."Texts out of context are pretexts"

1.Why are Jehovah’s Witnesses not allowed to salute the flag of any nation, recite the pledge of allegiance, stand for or sing the national anthem, run for public office, vote, or serve in the armed forces?

2. I read this: "If a member is guilty of breaking a minor rule such as associating with a worldly person (one who is not a Jehovah's Witness) that individual could be marked."

What does this mean? That they're not allowed to befriend any non-JW people? Or is this for when they die?
