Hi,
I work at a used book venue, and we get a fair amount of used bibles in, and I pass many of them onto local charities, but I get a lot that are ripped up, overly drawn in, missing pages (sometimes half of the whole book) and generally unsuitable for use anymore. What can I do with these? What is the christian/catholic way to dispose of old bibles? I feel guilty throwing them away, I always feel like God is going to strike me with lightning when I toss them in the dumpster O_O eek! Anyone have any answers out there?

Thanks!
~Marne

I'm not a Christian so I don;t really care much about sin, but why do some Christians believe meditation is a sin?

I just got this bible scripture from an answerer to one of my question and it says this:

Psalm 4:4 ... Meditate in your heart ... and be still.

I went to a new church this weekend. I got myself dressed nicely, like what I'd wear to an office. Surprised!! Most of the people there were in jeans- even the women. Like what you'd wear to a ballgame- jeans, leggings, flip-flops, tank tops. One woman even wore her biking shorts-complete with a baseball cap. It was as though they rolled out of bed and grabbed whatever was "comfortable"- as though sitting quietly for 1 hour demanded the utmost in comfort.
I know there's the argument "At least they show up, God doesn't care what they wear" but I always thought we were supposed to offer Christ our best.
What's going on? And do you agree/disagree with dressing for church?

So you claim your god is omnipresent and omnipotent... the picture of perfection. The definition of perfection indicates finality, therefore, why would god NEED anything, specifically us. Perfection denotes a lack of need, so why create us at all? Specifically, why create us with the purpose of worshipping "god"?
Would not worship denote desire and therefore imperfection, even so much as an ego?

And none of that "just because" or "we arent meant to know" crap, you believe he created us in his image, obviously not physically because we were "designed" for a physical earth (eyes, nose, mouth: Sensory perception and nutrient accrueing).

If God was such a cruel being to be feared, why would you follow him? Since you say God is good, what is there to fear?

I have a theory that the biggest reason people continue to follow religion is not because they care about a God but because they are afraid of suffering!

Religious people have strong needs to feel safe, even in the face of death, and to feel that there is an omnipotent, loving guardian watching over them.

These are reasonable hopes, but the evidence doesn't support the conclusions that life after death or any relevant God exists.

Nonetheless, the emotional needs are very real. Should atheists acknowledge these needs expressed by those who believe in the supernatural?

The individuals I am reffering to deny the teachings of Jehovah Witnesses (Jesus being Micheal the archangel, etc. etc.), whom this theory of a "created christ" is usually attributed to, and profess the Jehovah Witnesses to be false teachers. However, they insist that Jesus is a creation of God the Father (Created some time before Genesis 1:1). They do acknowledge the trinity, and I can see that they struggle when the try to apply the trinitarian view to their concept of a "created" Christ.

Is there any mainstream Christian denominations that really believe in a created Christ?

Would it be going too far to call this a heresy of the traditional Catholic or Prodestant faith?

Out of all of the sects in the world, we notice an uncanny coincidence: the overwhelming majority just happen to choose the one that their parents belong to.

Not the sect that has the best evidence in its favour, the best moral code, the best cathedral, the best music.

When it comes to choosing from the smorgasbord of available religions, their potential virtues seem to count for nothing, compared to the matter of heredity. This is an unmistakable fact; nobody could seriously deny it.

Yet people with full knowledge of the arbitary nature of this heredity, somehow manage to go on believing in their religion, often with such fanaticism that they are prepared to murder people who follow a different one. - Richard Dawkins
