I have a theory that the biggest reason people continue to follow religion is not because they care about a God but because they are afraid of suffering!

BINGO!!! That's the MAIN reason why-people have been controlled by the church for so long because they are taught from a young age to believe in this crap about being burned and tortured forever. And if you are simple-minded enough you will believe that your creator is this horrible disgusting being who is very disturbed and sadistic...

First of all the suffering will not be eternal, In Revelation you see where death & HELL gave up the dead & they all were cast into the lake of fire. For what, to suffer according to the sins you commited, & yes some may suffer millions of years, But when all said and done that body & soul will be destroyed, & cease to exist .There is only one form of eternal life, & that is Through Jesus Christ. And if those in the lake of fire would burn without end, then they would have eternal life also based on the way many Christians tries to teach. Yes, I am a Christian & I thought one time that hell was eternal, But I studied the scriptures. And Yes, I would still serve God.

The funny thing is that when you accept him into your life and ask for forgiveness, he give you gifts, the holy spirit is one of those fine gifts and letting the holy spirit really come out in you, you will actually feel the presence of God and its an awesome feeling. If all people would follow all his commands and not just half way, noone would have any eternal suffering to fear, plain and simple.

That may be a reason for some, but not me.

I don't believe in Hell...there will be no suffering inflicted upon me for not following.

Of course, I know God exists from my own personal experience...so I would never stop "believing."

God wants our love but does not want our love to be founded in fear...that is unstable. We, in our limited humanness, know that love cannot be coerced or manipulated in any way. It is not God who places fear in people but man who has instilled fear in a way that is not intended. Yes, there is a consequence for those who choose not to believe in Jesus. But the more we grow closer to God the more we see and want His love that is attractive resulting in no need think about eternal suffering.

That may be the biggest reason, but it's not the only one, if you have a relationship with God only for your own personal benefits then it is not a healthy relationship, I believe that these are in the category of "lukewarm".

That's not true.It is the joy of being reunited with loved ones and serving the Lord throughout eternity. It isn't some "Cloud" place but a real place with trees and water and beautiful buildings etc.No fear of Hell is but a small part of it.By the way the Bible talks about those things,I'm not making it up.
