I went to a new church this weekend. I got myself dressed nicely, like what I'd wear to an office. Surprised!! Most of the people there were in jeans- even the women. Like what you'd wear to a ballgame- jeans, leggings, flip-flops, tank tops. One woman even wore her biking shorts-complete with a baseball cap. It was as though they rolled out of bed and grabbed whatever was "comfortable"- as though sitting quietly for 1 hour demanded the utmost in comfort.
I know there's the argument "At least they show up, God doesn't care what they wear" but I always thought we were supposed to offer Christ our best.
What's going on? And do you agree/disagree with dressing for church?

People get dressed up for things they "like" such as clubbing, weddings, dinner dates, and holiday parties.

To see women in biking shorts and torn jeans was a surprise. I wondered if our new church was exceptionally casual, or if this was the trend in other areas.

I don't go to Church, and I'm not even a Christian, but I agree that when you go to a service, you should dress like you're going to a service. I see it like going to a job interview and there's an opening in heaven. You really want that job, so you dress the role. When I go to a job interview I will dress for the interview, not for whatever I have planned afterward. I'll drive by churches and see the congregations going in looking more fit for a day at the beach (or in winter time, a rap concert) than the Sabbath.

I was raised with dressing up to go to church, even nice clothes then what we normally wore to school. I dress up for church still, but there have been a couple times that I was unable to where nicer clothes as I would go to my mom's and not expect to be going to church that sunday. I am usually in nice blue jeans and a sweater at the least.

I agree that we should dress nicely as a sign of respect. But not to the point of legalism that women have to wear dresses to their ankles, and men have to wear a tie every Sunday. I think each person needs to find the dress code for themselves, after seeking God for His advice. What one person considers nice, someone else would not be comfortable in.
What does annoy me is people who chew gum in church, people who drink soda or coffee during church, people who listen to their ipods in church, and people who carry on conversations during the sermon. I think we should at least be polite of others who want to pay attention.

I think it's a backlash against the old school where people dressed up mainly to impress each other. In those days, people who showed up in jeans or t-shirt or beards were not welcomed. So churches realized this was wrong, and people were welcomed in however they came. Plus, as a society, people just aren't as formal as they used to be. People used to wear suits and ties to baseball games, remember? But I agree that it just doesn't seem right to show up in junky or immodest clothing, unless that's all you own and you are homeless or nearly so. But don't judge a church by it's clothing, lest you be judged as well.......................

Many churches today use contemporary music and casual dress as a way of attracting people who wouldn't ordinarily come to a church service. Even though I attend this type of church, I tend to agree with you that we should offer Christ our best.

No need to dress up to worship God. He will accept you the way you are, as long as you accept him and his Son. For additional details and information, see Revelation 16.16.

Who are you to judge what others wear? What makes you the authority? Why do you even go to church? To look at what others wear and judge them. I thought the whole point of going to church was to worship your Lord. Did you have time after observing everyone else's attire?
