Because fear of God is not the abject, paralyzing fear that grips people in some situations. It is the kind of fear that a child may feel for his father, even though he loves his father and knows that his father loves him.
Fear of God is really a profound reverence for the Creator that stems from the realization that he is the complete embodiment of righteousness, justice, wisdom, and love. It involves a healthy dread of displeasing God because he is the Supreme Judge with the power to reward and to punish. “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God,” wrote the apostle Paul. (Hebrews 10:31) God’s love is not something to be taken for granted, nor is his judgment something to be downplayed. That is why the Bible reminds us: “The fear of Jehovah is the start of wisdom.”—Proverbs 9:10.

Fearing God is the wrong direction. With fear, there can be no love. God would like us to love Him.

Fear is not equal to love or respect. Fearing God is a belief given by the church to control people. So that people will do what the church tell them to do. It is easier to control a person if the person is fearful. If the person is not fearful, then how can you control him and tell him what to do? This is the way how the church takes away people's power and manipulate people.

To fear God is to acknowledge that He is not only greater than we are, but more powerful as well. He is our creator and to fear God is to respect and know our place with Him. Praise the Lord!
If you did have a relationship with God you would know how loving He is when you study and obey His word in the Bible.

Because he is righteous and perfect. Think of it like when you were a child and you had fear that if you did something bad, you were going to get spanked by your parents. that is why people should fear him. If they are not going to live by his commands then people need to fear the Wrath he will bring upon people in the end times!

The King James version of the Bible (1611) uses the word "fear" the way we would use the word "reverence". So when they say "fear God", they actually mean "have reverence for Him".

If you look up the original Greek on what we interpret the word "fear", you would see that it means to honor, hold with reverance, worship, value, respect.
The King James interpretation of that is "fear."
I imagine if you lived in the age that the King James was interpreted, people used that word "fear" to mean respect.
