I'm not a Christian so I don;t really care much about sin, but why do some Christians believe meditation is a sin?

I just got this bible scripture from an answerer to one of my question and it says this:

Psalm 4:4 ... Meditate in your heart ... and be still.

Well, sure if your Christian you would probably not Meditate by gazing at a Buddha statue or a Hindu Deity, and I'm sure Buddhist or Hindu’s don’t meditate on Jesus. Same thing different 'Deity'. I'm sure Buddha or Krishna's not going to condemn you for using what works for you, that would just be arrogant and shameful. Personally I don’t often meditate on deities, although I do sometimes.

Mainly meditation is a way to still your mind so that you can clear yourself of negativity. It can be used as a form of psychology and doesn't need to be religious in anyway.

There are way too many nutty so-called 'Christians' who don't have a clue about what being Christian really means, so how can anyone expect them to give any real answers from a Christian perspective?

There's nothing wrong at all with meditation - many churches hold 'Christian Meditation' sessions and it's what Christian mystics do most of the time (plus contemplation).

I think the problem is that the ignorant among Christians equate meditation with Eastern philosophies and other religions - and they don't realise that it's always been a practice in their own faith since Christ's time on Earth.

If you're meditating on God's word, that's great (as in Psalm 4:4). Some forms of meditation are an invitation to evil spirits.

Well, the bible also says that dreaming is a form of witchcraft, and that's a sin too. That stuff if just weird. I am generally a good person, I don't steal, kill, or hurt things. I think That meditating is trying to gain a source of clarity to get over all the sinful things that cloud our lives. Meditating is fine. Take care!

I'm a Christian, and I meditate every day. I meditate in the quiet of my living room. It's an awesome time, because I really feel God's presence, and He ministers to me.

God said to meditate on His Word. When you meditate, you block out all interference, and concentrate on God.

Why would God consider that sinful?

Thanks for the verse. Yes, we are to meditate on His Word.

Also there is a book out there "Yoga for Christians". But when I have had family / friends tempted of Yoga, the Lord gave me this verse to send them. (I would like to get the book for them later. If I ever remember to order it.)

What God gave me:
Philippians 4:8,9 Whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, if there be any virtue / praise, think (meditate) on these things....& the God of peace shall be with you..

Meditating on these things are scripture and promise. But there isn't anything in the Bible to meditate on nothingness. So, that can be dangerous. Also hypnosis is wrong. I got stuck in a trance because of practicing that, & that was a 1 yr breakdown in a trance. Until I found God and God healed me.

Well also, some types of meditation is sin. It depends on what one is meditation on. What we think/ meditate should be the positive, victory, truth, Gods promises...

Some times people meditate on gossip, lies, doubt, fear, idols, etc... That would be sin.

Psalm 4:4 is referring to meditation on YHVH, not Transcendental Meditation, which focuses on Hindu deities. There is such a thing as Christian meditation.

According to the gnostic gospels which were ordered destroyed by Pope Gregory in 581, Jesus taught about enlightenment not salvation. That would make meditation very good, don't you think?

Be still and know that I AM God. That to is in the bible. Some make idols out of words, or a book of words. That is why they accuse others of worshipping idols, they themselves do it. They don't understand "truth". They don't know the I AM of themselves after thought falls away. Heart has lost it's true meaning also, the heart of anything is it's center. Not emotional .

It is not sinful in and of itself. The sin comes when we meditate on that which we ought not to. Meditating on God's word is not only acceptable, but necessary.
