for instance: Jacob deceives (lying, commandment 9) his father Isaac (honor thy father and mother, commandment 5) in order to steal (commandment 8) the birthright from his brother Esau. he then flees into the wilderness where god tells him he is good and holy.

there is another reference in the book of mormon 1st Nephi 4:5-27 where Nephi is instructed "by god" to kill Laban, the king while he is passed out drunk, so that he may steal the plates of brass on which the five books of Moses are engraved.

now, if god is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and god set forth commandments saying "thou shalt not do this" with a period at the end, how come so many "prophets" are instructed to break his commandments, proving that god is in fact NOT the same, and that he DOES change his mind.

in other words, if god is omnipotent, could he have not set forth another avenue with which Jacob could have obtained his fathers blessing, or that Nephi could have obtained the brass plates?

Especially troubling when they KNOW you don't share their beliefs and respect them enough to not impose your beliefs on them. Why do people feel the need to say that they hope you return to the God that created and died for you...Doesn't do much for me really...rather rude...its like an attempt to make someone eat liver and onions...why would you feel compelled to force your views on another person who is quite comfortable and confident in their own, different, spiritual path?

I like the course, but its getting annoying...not a good balance between Christianity and other beliefs...maybe I'm just pissed at that. The book report can be on any number of books. I've read 2 of the ones from the list in hopes that I would get inspired...now I'm just unmotivated...arghhh

One of the things I've seen in the Qur'an that bothers me is that it seems God does not love everyone unconditionally. It seems to be saying he hates certain people, because they sin.

In my own understanding of God, he is like a good parent that loves his children, even when they are going astray. His love makes Him want for them to come back to him, for their own good. But he does not hate them.

Ever hear the expression "right makes might"?

The phrase by Abraham Lincoln's words in his February 27, 1860, Cooper Union Address: "Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it."

Since every religion thinks they are "right", they think they also have the might (and "duty") to defeat an enemy.... so they start wars.

Want to reduce the number of wars? Eliminate religion.

We all know Islamic doctrines are the most intolerant and Muslims are the most intolerant people in the world. This begs the paradoxical question of whether one is being intolerant by not having tolerance for an intolerant belief system.

The answer of course is NO. Being "tolerant" is not an absolute edict of suicidal pacifism, although many leftists act like it is. Being tolerant is essentially being accepting or non-judgemental of a belief or culture where there is no real or proximate threat.

For example, if I hate homosexual activity, even though there is no immediate threat to me personally as a result of a gay couples conduct, then I am being intolerant.

This uptomizes Islam. Muslims have extreme hate for everything about western culture even though theres no threat. Western music and movies and dress...you can hear them hiss and snarl and pour venom on these subjects ad nasuem...and whats so amazing is that there is no inherent threat to them.

I'm really intruiged on this one!

I've heard so many words describing it ...bigoted, hatred, indecent, lying, cheating, uncaring, blinkered, ireverent, perverted, murdering, evil, stupid, filth............

Is that what people really think of church? The church I go to is the total opposite of every description here and has doubled in size over the last year alone to the point of outgrowing our current building cos we can't get everyone in (and that's after going to 2 meetings on a Sunday morning).

If I ever went into any place like the one described above I would never want to set foot in the place again, so why does church have this image?

guys come on... Jesus wasn't born in December. The holiday that we celebrate as the birth of our savior is based on a combination of pagan celebrations

a muslim classmate saved my life in college. he described himself as persian rather than iranian. matter of pride with him. i have know other --not as well. but i am sick of all the abrahamic religions. the big three are equally destructive, obstructive and a general pain in the ****. down with the big 3. anything but the big 3. for centuries they struggle and do far more harm than good.

Do I need "intelligence" in order to make a decision based on religion? Does a belief make one intelligent?

Have you ever wondered why everything that is so damned wrong feels so damned good? I have.

I was wondering, what if God really was the Devil and the Devil was the true creator? It would make more sense. Why would we be forbidden to enjoy the senses endowed to us by the very person that created them in the first place? Why would sex feel so good if it's only meant for procreation without recreation? Why would he create women so beautiful and then say not to admire their beauty?

What if we are meant to master the pain and pleasures of the physical realm to prepares us for the next one? And somehow, the wrong entity is winning the battle? It has been said that Satan is the great Deceiver... how can we be sure that he hasn't pulled off the greatest deception of all? To convince us that he is God and God is the Devil in an attempt to deny us the blessings of physical existence

What moral code have I broken when I crticize Islam? Why should I follow this code...what juridiction does it have over me?

Am I wrong to hate the literal intolerance for non-muslims expressed in the Quran? Such as:

Quran 9:29 “fight (jihad) those who believe not in allah” http://cwis.usc.edu/dept/msa/quran/009.qmt.html

Quran 8:12 “I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them. http://cwis.usc.edu/dept/msa/quran/008.q...

Only an idiot responds with "ye well da bible has dat". Idiot, even if the bible did have the PRESENT TENSE NON-ALLEGORICAL equivalent...why should that have any bearing on this (me) AGNOSTICS view of the horrible religion of Islam?

"The Quran doesnt mean what its says. Its says "fight those who dont believe" but its doesnt mean what its says". Idiot,I dont care what you think... I only care about how easily it can be interpreted in a violent way by the masses.

Someone asked me that and I said "because he can rectify it and will, very soon" I don't like giving fundamentalist answers like "don't ask that, God knows what he's doing". I took me lesson from Job. So is that a legit response or is there a better one?

What do you think? I'm walking out of Kohl's and I pass a car with a unique bumper sticker. Its a Christmas Tree with a nativity seen inside it. It says,"Keep Christ in the season." Do people actually think that Christmas trees have anything to do with Christ. There were no Christmas trees in the desert, never have been, never will be. Its equally funny that this person is contributing to the capitolism that has ruined the spiritual aspect of the season. If you have this bumper sticker, TAKE IT OFF!!!

Is it possible that God was in the human form many times? He chose people who were in duress. He was probably a jew in a concentration camp or a soldier in captivity. He could have been hundreds, maybe even thousand of these people, hence the term he uses in scripture to describe himself as "long suffering".
