It doesn't. Men take it to far and that is what starts wars. Man, not religion is the cause of all earthly grief.

Society in general admires conformity not individualism. Control is suppression and with control comes conformity. Those with power wish to remain in power and it has always been easy to use religon as a scapegoat as their means to an end. The christians say it best.... conform or be cast out.... a great example is the Inquistion. Those who did not convert were killed or tortured. The rest willingly went along or face the same punishment. The church of Rome grew in wealth and power on the backs of the dead. The same holds true for today. War makes people conform.

Religion does not start wars. People in opposing factions do.
The conflict in Ireland arose out of people's perceptions that Catholics were hard done by Protestants.
The current war against islamic countries have nothing to do with Islam but against what we perceive as terrorism.

Just look around at the anger on these boards to find your answer.

And remember that here it is not a typical forum, not really any means to keep the debate going. Imagine if it was, the fights that would break out. Religion is a very personal thing, and if someone say's yours is wrong, it's an attack on the most intimate part of yourself, your whole life and decisions are based on those beleifs.

Now imagine this on a larger scale, and you have war!

Religion does not start wars... Greedy, power hungry leaders do and they use religion to manipulate the masses to fight the war for them.

Ever hear the expression "right makes might"?

The phrase by Abraham Lincoln's words in his February 27, 1860, Cooper Union Address: "Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it."

Since every religion thinks they are "right", they think they also have the might (and "duty") to defeat an enemy.... so they start wars.

Want to reduce the number of wars? Eliminate religion.

Because if you go with the idea of blind faith, then why would you not believe a religious leader (or so-called) who claims that your god has communicated that you should die in pursuit of converting everyone to your religion? People have believed it before, and they will believe it again - and many people will die as a result.
