Islam is essentially a belief in a "God" who wants you to "Fight those who do not believe in Allah". Quran 9:29 http://cwis.usc.edu/dept/msa/quran/009.qmt.html

Believers are called "Muslims" and they are commanded to "fight with them until...religion should be only for allah". Quran 8:39 http://cwis.usc.edu/dept/msa/quran/008.qmt.htmlhttp://cwis.usc.edu/dept/msa/quran/008.qmt.html

This savage conception of God is so ridiculous its hard to find anything more absurd.

Consider Gibsons new movie about the Mayan's and their religious beliefs. People who carved hearts out of chests and threw them to the pagan worshipers. At least this horror was limited in scope. The Mayans didnt believe that their God commanded them to fight everyone who didnt believe, they just believed he required human sacrifice.

Show me something more absurd than Islam's conception of God.

"Some studies have suggested that atheism is particularly prevalent among scientists, a tendency already quite marked at the beginning of the 20th century, developing into a dominant one during the course of the century. In 1914, James H. Leuba found that 58% of 1,000 randomly selected U.S. natural scientists expressed "disbelief or doubt in the existence of God". The same study, repeated in 1996, gave a similar percentage of 60.7%; this number is 93% among the members of the National Academy of Sciences."

I know that Christians make up the majority with Islam being the second most popular but where does Agnosticism come in in that list?

I do realise that Agnosticism isn't a religion.....

A lot (not all) Athiests say they wont't even consider believeing until there is proof...

What is your SPECIFIC definition of proof.. What would have to happen for you to believe?

That is an honoured title. Also, up until the 4th century this is what many christians believed. It was at the Council of Nicea that the idea of the trinity was formulated.

'Surely, they have disbelieved who say: "Allah is the Messiah ['Iesa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary)." But the Messiah ['Iesa (Jesus)] said: "O Children of Israel! Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers) there are no helpers.' (Qur'an 5:72)

'Surely, disbelievers are those who said: "Allah is the third of the three (in a Trinity)." But there is no ilah (god) (none who has the right to be worshipped) but One Ilah (God -Allah). And if they cease not from what they say, verily, a painful torment will befall the disbelievers among them.' (Qur'an 5:73)

Okay, I have no religion... I mainly believe religion is a meaningless pursuit and a waste of time and energy. However, I am very respectful of those who practice any relgion. I know that their beliefs are just as valid as mine and that any belief system is very important to it's followers. My situation is this: I work with a guy who is VERY Christian. He is very nice and he likes me. I like him, too. I've never been treated so respectfully by someone, especially a man (I've always been one of the guys). But with our religious differences I wonder if it is even worth pursuing. What do you think???

I grew up in a 'VERY christian' household and understand the faith. I know that sometimes I get frustrated on here about the way some Christians try to force their religion on people. This man is very honorable in not doing that and instead leading by example.

And just to clarify: I'm just wondering, I don't even know if it would go that way at this point.

This is the question I asked:

As I said in my details, I have a brother but we don't have the same mother. Does this give a clue about my point about Mary? This point was completely skipped over by the ones who blindly gave an answer.

Protestants, try to show me one place in the Bible where it names any other son of Mary besides Jesus.

P.S.
There was more than one Mary in the Bible, so it would have to be the same Mary that was the mother of Jesus.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different religions in the world. What makes your religion more right (or less arbitrary) than another religion? How do you look back in history and convince yourself that your beliefs are less silly than the Gods of Greek Mythology?

2006-12-18 12:38:50 · 29 answers · asked by paul 2

Granted, it was a norm of the time. But *many* other holy men, predating Christ by hundreds of years, spoke up against the immorality of humans owning other humans.

All Jesus did was to legislate that we treat our slaves "morally" which implicitly endorsed it. (The word translated "servent" in your bible is "slave" in the greek.)

So - why do you think Jesus didn't speak up to say it was wrong?

If someone was threating your life and told you that you have to kill another person or they would kill you. In the eyes of the catholic church is it moraly right for you to kill that person. This is for a Catholic Morality class essay. If anyone can give me some sources to find factual information

Should it be taught next to "standard" ID and evolution in the schools seeing as how there are more scientists who subscribe to FSM-ID than to standard ID?

FACT:
In the Bible, Jesus is always described as being THE Son of Mary, not A son of Mary. If Mary had other sons, it would say that Jesus was A son of Mary, but it doesn't.

I have a brother and a sister that we share the same father but different mothers. It isn't unreasonble to believe that Joseph was an old widower with children from a previous marriage.

In that language and culture, the term "brother" was used very loosely and meant a close relative. It did not have to mean that Jesus and His "brothers" had the same Mother.

Also, Jesus said that anyone who does the will of God could be called His brother. So in that sense, the ones called His brother wouldn't even have to be blood relatives of Jesus, they could have been close friends.

Even today in modern western culture, we call people who aren't even blood relatives our "brothers" and "sisters". This is common for a close friend or when speaking about our "brothers and sisters in Christ".
