"Religious belief can cause damage to a society, contributing towards high murder rates, abortion, sexual promiscuity and suicide, according to research.

According to the study, belief in and worship of God are not only unnecessary for a healthy society but may actually contribute to social problems.

The study counters the view of believers that religion is necessary to provide the moral and ethical foundations of a healthy society."

Some people are all up in arms about taking their religion out of the public. People WANT the ten commandments at court houses. People WANT stores to say "christ" when they walk in. But, then again, some people want to smoke on an airplane.... Is this an appropriate comparison?

Many people think atheists are rebelling against God. Could someone clarify the subtle points of atheism that make this not quite correct?

our sins? I have always considered myself a believer, but I also know that sin - or what most would consider sin - is always a prevelant factor in my life. I don't understand, why temptation is always running rampant through me and why I continue to sin. When sinning, I'm usually enjoying it (it's sexual and hurts no one else) and feel good about it until afterwards, then the guilt sits in. Why do I repeat it? What can I do? What if it really isn't sinful, but rather fabricated as so many people have suggested, as well?

It seems socially that causes that liberals embrace and conservatives hate --- eventually come around to being right. Women getting the right to vote, housing standards, minimum wage, restrictions on children working, clean air act, Vietnam War, now the Iraq War...you get the idea.

My question is - can anyone think of a cause that was led by conservatives like this? Some general concern that the whole country eventually embraced, instead of the other way around.

A vast majority of the six million Jews killed by Hitler (raised a good Catholic) prayed very fervently for their Christian concentration camp guards not to kill them. God did nothing.

Christian families in Asian prayed for the survival of those lost in the 2004 tsunami. God did nothing.

Ted Haggard probably prayed not to be gay. God did nothing.

George Bush prays for victory in Iraq. God has done nothing.

So, what was that about the "power of prayer"?

Atheists just cant figure us out? SOME of them continually tells us how wrong we are, question how we can possibly believe such "nonsense" as the Bible, cant understand how we could believe in a "sky daddy".

1 Corinthians 2:10, “But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God

Noone knows the things of God except the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit wich we recieve. Is that why we get it, and they dont?

I am more of a liberal Christian. I do not believe assigning vast generalizations and taking what Christ taught way out of context. In the mannor that I do not see how anyone could get the idea that any non-believer would be sent to Hell, this is not what Christ tought. I do not even know if I believe in a Hell. I do not like how many Christians judge others, this seems to be a trait of the more conservative brances. I believe in doing a life of good, letting my actions speak for me.

I am thinking methodist from what I have studied, but what do you guys think?

Also, what is the atmospheres at like in some of the denominations, that is also important to me. Which denominations have the most activities/summer camps for kids in general?

And please none of the "denominations are not necessary." That has nothing to d with my question, obviously religious denominations can do great things for the community and beyond, a way to strengthen faith.

Thank you.
