There is a very high degree of correlation. But that does not always indicate cause and effect! Do highly troubled societies turn to religion more than wealthy and healthy societies Because they are troubled? If a society turns to religiopn does it give up on real solutions for its problems and begin a self reinforcing cycle.

How could these ideas be tested.

I think you would have to question the influence on the research...was it influenced by Satan? If so the results may be tainted to influence those who sit on the fence of Commitment to God.
I think the society I live in is hindered by people, not belief in God.

That is the biggest crock of sh't I have ever heard. Was that written by Satan himself.
The reason society is the way it is is the lack of belief in God.
