Can't hate something you don't believe exists. Familiar with logic, are you?

Atheists didn't invent the terms. We're just behaving naturally, as we were born to do. Religion is man-made.
Therefore, call us whatever you like. We don't believe a god exists. It's really that simple.
A question for you to ponder... I assume you don't believe in Santa Claus. Is there a word to describe you, then? Anti-Santaist perhaps? If there's not a word, do you think there should be one? I don't. And I don't feel the need to be called an atheist, either.
But we allow ourselves to be titled this way, because religious people feel the need to define us.

The majority of atheists I know are people of science and have a hard time believing anything on faith alone. They'd rather use science and intelligence to explain the universe. Religion requires a bit of blind faith - you have to take the bible's (or whatever book's) word for it.
That's why the place where science and religion overlap is most interesting for atheists and agnostics. Much of Carl Sagan's writings, for example, deal with places where religion and science are at odds.

If God existed, I would indeed be a misotheist. Wouldn't you?
Let's see, on my checklist of reasons to hate (the Christian) God:
1. He blames all of humanity for the trickery of Eve, when he created the situation and the snake.
2. He killed all of creation with a flood, in a fit of rage against humans.
3. He asked his followers to cut off their foreskins.
4. He asked Abraham to sacrifice his son, in a joke.
5. He raped Mary.
6. He sacrificed his son, Jesus, not a joke. This gave him enough essence to forgive the rest of us for our sins and for our sin through Eve.
7. He created Hell, a place where he will leave you to be eternally tormented if you don't believe in him.
8. He did not prevent any of the horrific natural disasters that have devastated humanity.
9. He did not prevent any of the horrific man-made disasters that have devastated humanity.
10. He allowed George Bush to win presidency.

Honestly (and this goes against my character) but I would have to agree that SOME are. Mostly when you once had faith and lost it -- When you go through some kind of tragedy and feel that the God you put faith in has abandoned you. Sometimes the person says they are an atheist but really they have turned to hated of God for being left to deal with life alone.

Some claim Sam Harris is. Another possibility is some atheists are really just theophobes.

Sure SOME are. And some aren't. What's your point?
editing my answer... some people develop a dislike/hate for 'god' or religion, before letting it go altogether. Atheists don't "hate god" we just reject the concept entirely... I do dislike some organized religions, but I can't "hate god" because why waste emotion on something that doesn't exist?

And just who is to do the diagnosing, theists? ;-)
Kind of hard to hate something you deny exists, don't you think?
We save our detest for those ignorant people who keep insisting god is real, not for the made-up mythological idea of a magic sky guy. But detest is different than hate. To modify a popular christian maxim: Love the theist, detest their ideas. :)

I don't hate God because I don't believe such a being exists. Neither do I hate religious people. I am not religious, not anti-religious.

Maybe. are you one of them? I'm an atheist, but I don't hate God because I don't believe in God. So glad to say that I'm not one of them.

That could be the case, but you are reducing complex subjects into simplistic generalizations
