It seems socially that causes that liberals embrace and conservatives hate --- eventually come around to being right. Women getting the right to vote, housing standards, minimum wage, restrictions on children working, clean air act, Vietnam War, now the Iraq War...you get the idea.

My question is - can anyone think of a cause that was led by conservatives like this? Some general concern that the whole country eventually embraced, instead of the other way around.

Adam - can you please add details about the nuclear arms race? You propose that the conservative movement - brought it about or shut it down?

Yeah, prohibition. It worked so well.

The feminists who championed prohibition were conservative.

Do conservatives have causes? I thought the very defenition of "Conservative" is someone who wants to keep things the same or go back to the way they were before? Liberals try to make change. Sometimes it's good. Sometimes it doesn't work out so well. I hope to always be a liberal and try new things! (This isn't really a religious question, though.)

Prohibition was not an exclusively conservative cause. In fact, it was very much feminist because it was seen as a step towards better male behavior, reducing domestic violence.
