This recent survey indicates that atheists are widely disliked and distrusted -- why? And why don't other groups -- such as Muslims -- rate the same level of distrust?

Why the argument that he gave us free will. Why would a loving God, an all knowing God create a world were we use free will to kill or live an altermitive life style (which I believe is genetic in most cases). Speaking of genetics, who chooses to be born deformed or disabled. Why does it have to be a mystery for we find an answer upon making it to heavan. Why do we have to go through despair to appreciate paradise...if he exist. I can assure you I appreciate my children without watching them suffer. Can God not use my method?

I've seen video's and such of Monks flogging themselves and have always wondered why they were doing it.

I figure it's causing pain in order to control ones own mind or at least redirect it away from sinful thoughts.

Also what is it exactly they use to do this with, it looks like rope but I'm sure there is more to it.

ok, my b/f, he is christian, im athiest. he is republican, i am democrat. i support gays and abortion, and all those other subjects. he doesnt. he lives his life for football, i hate it.

the problem: i was trying to keep from him for a while(we have been going out for a month now.) that i am athiest. somehow, he found out. and today, he gave me a bible and told me i had to read it "for him". he even underlined stuff that i should read and it had to do w/ 'sinning" for not believing in god. i believe he is disrespecting my beliefs. he thinks in going to hell, and he wants to save me, but i dont think that, because i think differently from him. should i leave him, or give him another chance? hes found my pet peeve on accient by trying to convert me to christianity...am i hating too much, im so upset at him. any suggestions??

I know this question is going to open a can of worms but i want to know....i knew nothing of religion and really i still don't i was not brought up in a religious home, i had a good family, honest kind and loving but never had religion explained or taught, after being on yahoo for a few months i am hearing all sorts of different opinions on religion, So far what i have heard is that jesus' mother had him when she was 15 yes?....well my question is, does this mean that you religious people condone 15 yr olds having sex, having children, not to mention the man who got her pregnant. Please remember i am not giving my opinion, i know nothing of this stuff, im just trying to make sense of it all cos so far what I've heard sounds pretty sordid....
