VATICAN CITY - The Vatican's chief astronomer said Friday that "intelligent design" isn't science and doesn't belong in science classrooms, the latest high-ranking Roman Catholic official to enter the evolution debate in the United States.

The Rev. George Coyne, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, said placing intelligent design theory alongside that of evolution in school programs was "wrong" and was akin to mixing apples with oranges.

"Intelligent design isn't science even though it pretends to be," the ANSA news agency quoted Coyne as saying on the sidelines of a conference in Florence. "If you want to teach it in schools, intelligent design should be taught when religion or cultural history is taught, not science."
"If they respect the results of modern science, and indeed the best of modern biblical research, religious believers must move away from the notion of a dictator God or a designer God, a Newtonian God who made the universe as a watch that ticks along regularly."

Rather, he argued, God should be seen more as an encouraging parent.

"God in his infinite freedom continuously creates a world that reflects that freedom at all levels of the evolutionary process to greater and greater complexity," he wrote. "He is not continually intervening, but rather allows, participates, loves."

The Vatican Observatory, which Coyne heads, is one of the oldest astronomical research institutions in the world. It is based in the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome.

When do you think people will "get the joke". Some of us on here joke every day about Da Vinci Code being the word of God. There are people who give serious answers. Don't you get it? We don't think the Da Vinci Code is the word of God, can't you tell sarcasm?

Some of us joke about evolution. We even conducted all these science books and falsified all these fossils, we even falsified all this evidence about chimpanzees having 98% of the DNA as humans. And when we ask questions about it, you all just get suckered in and proclaim Genesis 1 and 2. We already believe in this of course.

Some of us joke about being another religion. Nothing could be farther from the truth, we all share your faith in Jesus.

Some of us claim to use something called electricity. Nothing could be farther from the truth. There is no such thing. Its a joke. But you Christians fall for it every time. Why. Lighten up (not literally) its a joke.

what is it that assures you that the christian god won't eventually disappear as so many others have? what do you think separates the bible from so many other religious texts? what is it that makes christ-based religions the only true-religions and guarantee that theres is a heaven or hell for you in the "next life"? (please don't say just because god said so or because it's in the bible) i'd like mature answers

Before the Civil War, people were certain that Jesus was coming (out of this era came the 1830 pronouncement of the Rapture doctrine); before WWI, people were convinced that Jesus was coming (which gave rise to the Jehovah’s Witnesses); before and during WWII, people were positive that Hitler was the anti-Christ; now we discuss WW III, and again we are told it is "the end times" and "Jesus is coming back." Such proclamations were wrong before, so how is it that they are valid now?

I am a Christian and I believe in my God. But I still love you because you believe in a God. Other Christians may want to tar and feather me, but I believe in believing. God is good and he gave us all a sense of right and wrong. And we all know that no matter who or what you believe in.

If I said that I have never committed a sin, no one would believe me because its pretty much universally excepted among those who believe in sin that no one escapes it. But if no one can avoid sin, and everyone that is born will commit sin, then one can't escape the conclusion that it is part of who we are, how we are created. If that weren't the case, I could avoid committing sin if I tried really hard, right? But I can't can I? So if we avoid sin, it has to be part of us. So why should we be punished for it?

So, god just let you waist your breath knowing what you will pray about before you pray? If he doesn't answer your prayers, why doesn't he prevent you from praying in the first place or just tell you iin advance that your prayers wont be answered. Why do he let you sit around and wait for nothing?
