I spoke with a muslim once and this topic just happened to come up , and all he said was that there is too much idol worship in Hinduism and too many gods and this seemed to create a division in his heart towards people of the hindu faith !

I do not think that it is the muslim people generally speaking. I think it is the ones who are brutal and fundemental that disgust you. (and me too)
The muslim nation is like any other nation, they have their nut cases....I mean, Christians have their Jerry Farwell, and Jewish have...uhm....ok, maybe Jewish people don't have a freak fundementalist out there...or they just haven't showed up for the party...either way...the lesson is
The world is full of nut jobs just waiting to make a religion look really really bad.

The muslim religion calls for a total hatred for all other religions that do not turn to them. I am a Christian and while i do not agree with your religion , we are taught to just tell you that Jesus Christ died for all of your sins and all you have to do is truely ask for his foregiveness and you will be saved from eternal death. You have to make the personal decision to accept christ, so killing you or hurting you will not help anything. I have felt this personal change in my life so i know Jesus is alive in me.

That's a question only you can answer. I'm a Christian and was taught that we may not like other people but we are required to love them...
I personally believe that "people are people" regardless of their faith or beliefs. You either like them as individuals or you don't.

perhaps the same reasons a gnostic would be disgusted with a literalist, or a native american with an arrogant capitalist?

muslims mostly always form their own groups..they look out for each other..
most of my friends are muslims , they are really good people, may be its just a misunderstanding,..and if they do, reason may not be religion...
I observed this attitude..i thinks its more about you , than your religion..just go talk to them..sort it out..
