VATICAN CITY - The Vatican's chief astronomer said Friday that "intelligent design" isn't science and doesn't belong in science classrooms, the latest high-ranking Roman Catholic official to enter the evolution debate in the United States.

The Rev. George Coyne, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, said placing intelligent design theory alongside that of evolution in school programs was "wrong" and was akin to mixing apples with oranges.

"Intelligent design isn't science even though it pretends to be," the ANSA news agency quoted Coyne as saying on the sidelines of a conference in Florence. "If you want to teach it in schools, intelligent design should be taught when religion or cultural history is taught, not science."
"If they respect the results of modern science, and indeed the best of modern biblical research, religious believers must move away from the notion of a dictator God or a designer God, a Newtonian God who made the universe as a watch that ticks along regularly."

Rather, he argued, God should be seen more as an encouraging parent.

"God in his infinite freedom continuously creates a world that reflects that freedom at all levels of the evolutionary process to greater and greater complexity," he wrote. "He is not continually intervening, but rather allows, participates, loves."

The Vatican Observatory, which Coyne heads, is one of the oldest astronomical research institutions in the world. It is based in the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome.

Wow, do I find that beautiful and worthy to quote again:

"God in his infinite freedom continuously creates a world that reflects that freedom at all levels of the evolutionary process to greater and greater complexity," he wrote. "He is not continually intervening, but rather allows, participates, loves."

I hope I am not misinterperting what I am reading, is the Vatican giving in on evolution, that it is in God's plan of free will, finally?

The Catholic Church does not endorse intelligent design and fully accepts the idea of evolution. I read somewhere (sorry I’m not more specific) that there was a huge investigation into the whole evolution versus creationism at the beginning of the 20th Century and they came to the conclusion that evolution was 100% true and did not contradict the bible. They also acknowledge that the bible is not supposed to be interpreted in a literal way. The official line is that intelligent design cannot be accepted because its too weak a statement, some bishops would like to back it though as they still support creationist ideas but the official line is 100% for evolution.

So what's the problem with the statements? "Intelligent Design" is designed merely as a pass off of Creationism...silly literal readings of a book written by many different people, filled with imagery, not necessarily fact. It is a loose history that cannot possibly be thought to be a literal journey into history. To teach Creationism in the name of science is ludicrous at best, ridiculous on the face of it, and preposterous on the whole.

Great article, but it doesn't mean that the Bible is not true. It just means that some catholics have rejected God as the creator and are trying to degrade him to a human level. The next step is to reject God completely.

Intelligent design is not like any other science- it is faith based on God's Word that the World and everything in it was created in days.

Amoeba farting us out is a strawman. The 2nd regulation of thermodynamics regards warmth. It potential that the full warmth (power) of a device will replace into uniform over the years. it particularly is why a warm cup of espresso cools down, the warmth from it is being disbursed via our environment. What approximately Darwinian Newtonians? Willfully ignorant approximately what area of technological understanding? What information or factors of information are being skipped over? i've got nonetheless yet to pay attention somebody tell me what manatees have hoof caps on their flippers in the event that they weren't superior from a land-strolling ancestor. Chaos, reverting back to thermodynamics. Our planet isn't a closed device. New power is extra to Earth consistently by utilising that great solar situation. Regeneration of what? it particularly is purely babble.

Another piece of JAZZ from the CULT!

Does anyone but a Roman Catholic really care what the CULT comes up with??

I esca[ped because I saw too much...their catechism also admits that they worship the same god as the muslims! (Proof on file.)

If there is a creation (Earth) there must be a creator (God). Evolution is a fairy tale for adults. To believe we "evolved" from apes is so laughable it is a sad joke. Sad......because so many people believe it as fact where there is no fact to be found, only theory. How awesome is God!!!
