My opinion: Society to a large extent does define our happiness (for example, that we need good friends, good job, good looks, good things, etc. to be happy/fulfilled), and for many, there's nothing wrong with that cause they work for it and get it and live happy lives. But then, there are many who seem "ok" with life, not exactly happy or unhappy (a mix of both here and there), but what seems troubling is that they have no desire to change their lives for the better (of course, there is no real need to; one can live the way s/he wishes to). I think it's because society has set the bar for them, and they look only at what society says and not within themselves, thus never ever realizing their potential within. They just settle for less and basically "live and let live." And then there are those who may have incredible talent within but because they didn't fit into society for one reason or another, they could never thrive and just faded away unfortunately (or fortunately).
