The origin of the term "G-string" is obscure. The term is first attested in writings by Americans in the late 1800s describing the loincloth of Philippines natives. In the "Philippines Islands" entry in the 1911 edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, the term "geestring" is used. Others say the term is derived from the G-string on a musical instrument, but it may just be an abbreviation of "groin-string". The origin of the word "thong" is from the Old English thwong,a flexible leather cord.
There are a number of intermediate styles between full rear coverage and a string rear. Like the tanga, the g-sting is essentially a bottom covering that covers the pubis and leaves the buttocks bared; The term g-string is generally used when the vertical strap in the rear of a thong is no wider than a string. Other similar styles include the brazilian, rio, and t-back. The naming of the intermediate cuts is debatable, and different vendors use the words somewhat interchangeably.

The G-string or Thong is the earliest known form of clothing, some 75,000+ years old it was made to cover the male genitals and it's only in the last 40 years or so years womankind have used them as swimwear and underwear. Rumours suggest the Bikini is said to have been invented by Bridget Bardot during the 50/60s and it is not as intimate which highlights how new the G-string is to womankind.
Only male fossils have ever been dug up (in Africa) wearing a G-string.

That's a good question. If you think about it though....Look at the letter G. It kind of looks like one doesn't it? A T-string would probably make more sense though.

One possible answer is that it could be because the G String is the lowest string on a Violin (The leader of the Orchestra) tuned to the chord of G, by association it is also the lowest string on the human torso.

Because the only thing it covers is the G-spot
Actually G is shortened from Glutes which is in turn shortened from Gluteous Maximus (your butt)
thus it translates as "Butt String"
PS - I wanted to use the A word but yahoo wouldnt let me

Try this link. Essentially we don't really know where and how the term originated.
