There have always been bad things and insane people, it's just that todays world is miniscule compared to 40 years ago. Perception can be deceiving. 100 years ago parents used to beat their kids to death and it NEVER made the news. Horrible things happened that went unnoticed. Today society has gotten way more sensitive to things, and because of that, everything is noticed.

Insane? We have always been insane.

Great question. Many wise persons have worried about this issue. Spinoza, Dutch philosopher of the 1600s, believed that only a small minority could rise above the shallow mass by studying philosophy. Ortega y Gassett, Spanish philosopher, wrote a great book, Revolt of the Masses, basically saying that he was disgusted with the technologically advanced ignorants. Nietzsche thought that with effort everyone could surpass his/her shallowness but that has never happened. And so on. Throughout history the multitude can be shallow as they pursue money, power, fame, etc. It takes extra effort for someone to reach insight and depth through thinking, studying, creating, psychotherapy, etc. The trick is to find the right balance between depth and shallowness so you can enjoy the entire range of experience.

Yes I agree. Just look at our kids now day's. They seem not to care what they do! Most parents handing them things like cars. How do they learn you got to work for things. Hell I bought my first car, I got a job. Nobody helped me with college. I think our society will fall apart in due time. Hell all the jobs are outsourced! How can people buy things when they work at fast food places! I am afraid history will repeat itself. It always does. If things do not change our society is doomed. Just my opinion.
