...the elevator finally arrives, I go on first and press the button for the floor. It's apparent the other two people want to go to the same floor because the look at the highlighted button, pause as if they are in deep thought, then they each press the same exact button for the same exact floor. It's bad enough that one person pressed it after me, but then the last dummy goes ahead and presses it a third time?!?!?! Why??
Is that dumb, or is it just me?

Phadria must be one of the bozo's who presses the button after the 4th person has already done it.

Folks love to press buttons.
Perhaps each had siblings and had to fight for their turn to do it when they went somewhere as kids.

i understand, the elevator is a humorous place to be. human beings see that the call button is lit, and each guy or woman who walks as much as get on the elevator pushes it besides. i can purely wager on the clarification, we are human, and do humorous human issues. we actually do no longer understand the way an elevator works, and we actually do think of that pushing the button distinctive cases will hurry it up. it is so embarrassing for us if the elevator does no longer end on our floor, that we push it two times. And in on the instant's busy worldwide, we predict of that we've not got the time to waste. and we don't have confidence the guy who has already pushed the button, as nicely as no longer trusting the eleator. Now that we've that elevator concern solved, right that's yet another one: why whilst the doors open, can we've this compulsion to get out, regardless of if if is our floor or no longer? i'm responsible, there are 5 flooring in my construction at artwork, and that i've got been out the door onto all of them, by ability of mistake. LOL, help?

like you say you pressed the button and they just sat there staring at it. so i will guess that the elevator didnt go. so what happens is if you press it multiple amounts of times it will help the elevator read that it needs to go that floor so it will close the doors faster and get the move on. but thats what im assuming is why they pushed the button. but sometimes they press it to ensure they are going to that floor...

With some elevators, if you press a floor button, it indicates to the elevator that the passenger is inside, and it gets the elevator doors to close sooner.
So- that is probably what they were hoping for... to reduce the wait time for the doors to close. So, it could have been just stupid, or, more likely, just people who are hopefully impatient.

One of the great mysteries of life, I'm afraid there simply isnt a rational answer to that question unless, they know something you dont. Maybe the elevator wants to be pressed 4 times for the same floor, maybe thats the only way it will work or maybe there is some terrible conspiracy going on or maybe you only imagined it or...............

They were just making sure the elevator knew three people were going to the same floor. I guess they thought it had sensors that could tell two more people got on.

I've had it happen to me before, but not with that many people pressing the same button!
Man that's stupid (almost funny)! Where did people's brain cells go?

It's elevator protocol. It's awkward being in an elevator with strangers, people do it, so as just to do something with their hands and not stand absolutely still while they reach their destination.
Plus it is a non verbal communication to other elevator riders to tell them where one is going.

Rotfl. You should have pushed it one more time, and said "This is just in case the button didn't get the message the first three times."

Your question made me laugh.
I have no idea why people do that.... I've seen that, too!
Maybe the glowing little button is lying? Is it really lit?
I dunno!
Best regards
