Early Christian Art. The Roman Empire. As for the fashion, it would be during the medieval era when gothic was more about romance then all black wearing. Over the wears it re-invented itself to what we see today.

The goth look draws from several sources, not the least being the cartoons of Charles Addams, the punk look, Edwardian illustrations of horror and vampire tales, horror hostesses like Vampira and Elvira, and, to a certain extent, the S/M bondage culture. Beauty in darkness, so to speak. Largely improvisational.

There are lots of different influences and lots of different goth styles. Some influences include the fashions of medieval Europe and Victorian England; horror movies, especially those depicting vampires and those of the silent era; punk and glam fashions of the 1970s; and S&M culture. Goth is very diverse.

I owuld say in Europe. When I lived there I saw a lot of Goths, maybe the weather or surrondings influenced them since the buildings are old and creepy. Also, there are alot more goth stores, even places where you can get goth style weddings over there.

You mean dressed in all black?....

I would say U.S.A. in regards to the modern day look.

All black was worn by a lot of priests though in the medieval era so I would say the real Gothic movement started with catholic priests.
