For the people of the Dominican Republic, Child Marriage is a serious issue. Over 95% of the children who are forced into marriage are girls. The children have no say whether they would like to get married or not.
It is important that the people of the world, including children, have a say in whether or not they would like to get married. Over 90% of unmarried Dominican girls aged 15-19 are in school, whereas 3 out of 5 of their married peers are neither in school nor working. That says that if you get married before you get a substantial amount of education you will have a more difficult time in life.
The Dominican Republic would like the creation of a world law that says that children: must be at or above age 16, Have had an education of up to or exceeding 8th grade, and must have child’s agreement to marriage written and signed.
