Aside from having been effectively demonized, pot has the logistical challenge of being rather "un-testable" from the DUI standpoint.

That is, we can tell if there's alcohol in your system, but no test exists yet (that I'm aware of, or that's commercially available) to tell if you're under the influence of marijuana. Blood or urine tests show THC, but it can be residual, and not affecting your judgement, and reaction times. That makes it tough to (fairly) enforce DUI laws that would face new challenges with people driving under the influence of the new drug.

A person who really wanted to push the legalization issue should concentrate on ways of creating quantifiable "potency" measurements, and field testing units for police departments.

Because in the '50's, pot was scarier. When all the geezers die out, it will be legal.

Ask a cop, I'm sure they would give you an interesting answer.....Alcohol used to be illegal, you know. Tobacco should be illegal, it is damn harmful. Stupidity should be a felony. Life is not fair.
