I think someone should invent the "step-down" cigarette. Make a line of cigarettes with different levels of nicotine in them to work sort of like the patch and gum. Would you try it if it were available? Am I on to something here? Any responses welcome.

Whilst I think your idea is good, the fact is, although they do offer differing levels of nicotine (in Australia anyway) in cigarettes from 16 mgs to 1 mg, all the research they've done has shown that whilst smokers purchase lower tar etc cigarettes to try and reduce their consumption of these chemicals, they end up dragging harder on the lower tar/nicotine cigarettes and thus defeat the purpose of actually buying lowered tar/nicotine cigarettes.
I personally smoked for 14 years (since a young teen) and just quit Jan 1 this year and found it better to go cold turkey than to slowly wean myself away from them

They've found that people who smoke "lights" or cigarettes with heavier filters actually inhale more deeply and hold in the smoke longer, in order to make up for the lower nicotine levels. Smokers typically do this without realizing it.

So, with a "step-down" cigarette, you would probably jsut smoke more of them of inhale more deeply and still end up with the same amount of drug in your system.

You need something that regulates the flow of nicotine into the blood stream, like a patch or gum. Something you can't manipulate.

There is already a brand of cigarettes out there that do just that. I've only seen them in Indiana though and they are close to $6 a pack. Go figure!

I'll try to remember the name and come back with a link if I'm able to remember!
