your opinions please... what is racism? - obviously the big stuff is disgusting and no one should support it at all - but is mimicking other cultures racist? if you think it is then surely mimicking other peoples county dialects falls into this category?

I am a HR director and I have spent my career studying civil rights law and affirmative action. I hear so many people opposed to it. I think a lot of people do not understand what it is. Affirmative action simply assures that nobody can hire on the basis of race, sex, ethnic background, or sexual orientation. Affirmative action is the enforcer of equal opportunity. The is no quota, not really. If you have only hired 50 white males between 25-35 then you WILL be looked into. You are not forced to hire unqualified individuals. If a black person comes in and a white and whoever is the most qualified and the best fit for the company will get the job.Assuming that blacks are not qualified is racist. No company is going to hire unqualified individuals, it does not matter your color. When Affirmative action first began, many people were still stuck in the seperate but equal mindset and change did not go well for them. So politicians ran with it and fed people fear instead of what is true.

Some peolpe say it is a combination of all theese things. However I have found that I have always been attracted to people with similar values, family first, money is not important, e.t.c... I know you might say this is common, but I know a couple who have christian values,( very accepting, loving christian values!) who are friends with an athiest gay couple who have very different values- Yet their personalities are similar, and the differences in their values are respected and often bring life to some of the most brilliant conversations I have ever heard. So do you think that if we are attracted to one aspect of a person- beauty, brains, personality,e.t.c... that none of the other parts that make up that person actually matter? And what do you think you are most attracted to? Do you notice a pattern? I must say I am still thinking about my own answers.....

I was in England in the summer of 1994 and it was so different when I went back in 1998 and then lately when I went there in 2004 , it seemed so much like the U.S. that I dont know if was just me or if the English seemed so much more like Americans. It seemed that England had lost a lot of its charm and innocence and distinctivenss in their people. Thanks for your comments.

Why is society generally so much against people who are different in some way? If somebody is not like society thinks they should be they are pushed into changing and assimilating, becoming "normal"/average (even if that means they can't be themselves) or they end up pretty much like outcasts, "freaks" that society looks down on and would rather avoid.

Why is society so obsessed with fitting us into its little boxes of pre-defined ideas of how you should be?

I think it's sad how some people must hide their real self in order to be accepted by society. If they don't put on an act and pretend to be how society wants them to be they face rejection. Why can't society embrace variety more and accept people for who they are as long as they aren't harming anyone?

Think about this: the tribe makes use of the wisdom and experience of the old ones for the benefit of the young ones. A tribe shares its knowledge, its information, its skills, for the benefit of the entire tribe. There are specialists, but they are supported (whatever the medium of exchange) due to their value to the tribe as a whole.

With Yahoo Answers, and the Internet more generally, we appear to have the potential of becoming a global tribe. Let's make it one human tribe, no divisions. Let's become a peaceful, productive tribe that shares with good heart and lets no one fall alone. Can we do it?

I'm 62, and I really enjoy swings, but rarely get the chance. I used to think it was because we were too big, so I accepted it, but nowadays many 10 year olds are heavier than me. I was in a park last week, and nobody else was around, so had a lovely swing. It did not break. And now I'm staying in a house where there's a swing, so for the next two weeks I'm in heaven. I think it's time this outdated rule was changed, nobody over a certain weight, rather than a certain age - what do you think ?

A couple of days ago I posted the question, "Is it me or does Indian president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam look like Mr Burns from the simpson's?". This was meant to be a light hearted funny question because the picture yahoo put up of him against his question was an Indian looking Mr burns!!!..which I though was really funny. I got 8 responses, 6 finding it funny, as intended, then another 2 asking not to tease him and saying I was prejudice!! Can anyone tell me how I was being prejudice? This also brings me onto Big Brother and how Oftel have had 200 complaints about Shilpa being targeted by housemates Jade Goody, Danielle Lloyd and Jo O'Meara because she is Indian!! What a load of @*&'@**'s! The reason she is being ignored is because she is not a very nice person and they don't get on with her....NOT because she is Indian...The complaint's have stemed from 2 of the house mates mimicking her accent which surely makes her a racist for mimicking Jade all the time!
