Think about this: the tribe makes use of the wisdom and experience of the old ones for the benefit of the young ones. A tribe shares its knowledge, its information, its skills, for the benefit of the entire tribe. There are specialists, but they are supported (whatever the medium of exchange) due to their value to the tribe as a whole.

With Yahoo Answers, and the Internet more generally, we appear to have the potential of becoming a global tribe. Let's make it one human tribe, no divisions. Let's become a peaceful, productive tribe that shares with good heart and lets no one fall alone. Can we do it?

Are we becoming a global tribe? Not yet. Net even close.

First realize that it is winter and here I sit with a glass of French wine, eating Goya Maria biscuits from Spain with my Tamarindo flavored gelatin made with Mandarin Oranges from China, Cranberries from New England, Kiwi from Australia and red seedless Grapes from Chili. I didn’t have any ripe bananas (from who knows where). The fuel for shipping any of these may (and probably did) come from the Middle East. And I am not wealthy by the standards of the United States.

The world seems to be in the process of shrinking. I am optimistic, but I am also a realist. True, I have friends from all over the world. But I cannot speak any language well except English. Can I imagine “the world living as one?” Yes, but I believe that I am currently in the minority.

In other parts of the planet there are armed disputes over Language, Customs, Ethnic Origins, National Boundaries, Natural Resources, Religious Beliefs and Political Power. The United States is almost evenly divided between those who might look forward and those who might wish to live as their grandfathers did in the past. We are all stuck in the present.

Can we do it? This is another question entirely. Perhaps we need bigger carrots and smaller sticks.

Communication will be one of the deciding factors. The Internet and Yahoo! Answers may play an important role in this. But open hearts and tolerant minds are the true keys to the success of such a venture. Or should I say adventure. It does cover new ground for humanity.

Humanity has not succeeded so far. Lets hope we can do it in the future.
