I think that it is ridiculous also. Yes Path, they have freedom of speech, so do you and I, but, try saying "bomb" in an airport, train station, post office, you will see that freedom of speech does not mean run you mouth incoherently and suffer no consequences. You are NOT given the right to "say anything you want" that is not freedom, that is just foolish.
I agree that movie stars do use their celebrity to lobby for whatever cause they latch onto, but think about this, what if someone "ridiculous" was ranting about peace, war, global warming, being a litterbug, whatever, someone like Britney Spears and her hubby, Tom Cruise, etc... Would they carry the same weight as George Clooney? To me they would, exactly the same.....none.

Well, I'd have to agree that if you are old enough to fight for our freedom, then you should be old enough to vote. The argument isn't really a question of being qualified to vote, which most 18 year olds are not, but an issue of fairness. If you are going to have taxes and life-changing choices foisted upon you, If you are going to be expected, legally and otherwise, to be responsible as an adult, then you ought to have the right to at least choose the people who will make these choices and the decisions about how this will be carried out. So, the fairness issue is important, even if we would prefer that they made better-informed choices. Frankly, many young people make all kinds of choices we would rather they didn't. In part because they remind us of all the bad decisions we made, and we wish they'd save themselves the pain and learn from our mistakes. They drive badly, make bad relationship, sexual, career, food, and conduct choices. Very few people escape youth unscathed - and those that do, aren't necessarily better off for having been 'perfect' all their lives. If we wait for people to do everything the way we think is best, we'll be waiting a long time. Besides, even God doesn't do that. He tells us how we can live good and peaceful lives, and then we go out and regularly make choices that I am quite certain make him outdo the best mom-of-teenager eye roll. When WILL these kids ever grow up? This is just why there is an electoral college, and why we do things the way we do. To prevent complete idiots from taking over the world. Except the ones we elect, of course. If we really want to make a difference, how about going back to news reporting that is actually reporting the news? You know, like, facts? Instead of carefully selected factoids artfully displayed to express the opinion of the newscasters or their bosses or the station (in spite of their protestations to the opposite)? Just some truth would be nice. I haven't watched the news in about 15 years, and people always look at me like I'm crazy - 'Don't you feel disconnected? Uninformed?' No, why would I be better informed by listening to Barbie and Ken feed me carefully manufactured lies and fluff? I am actually much better informed by 'catching' bits and pieces from the radio and the internet, and making sure that I believe none of what I hear, and half of what I see, and measuring that against common sense. Plus, then my brain isn't filled with horror all the time.

Actors and actresses are like high priced hookers, they'll say whatever any corporation wants about government issues for a price...or for more fame because everyone is all "Wow, this celebrity cares so much because he/she is giving to charity!" People get tax breaks for donating!!

I think that they can be useful in drawing attention to important social issues. It is how they go about this sometimes that is questionable. There are those who are genuine and not just interested in self promotion and others who only seem to become socially aware when there is a new film to be promoted.

I believe that we should each have a "say" in our government's issues. I do not believe that they should be given free press as they are to do so. We are not given such. You are absolutely correct that they seem to influence a number of people that we would not by their popularity. Have a great week!!

I think it's good sometimes, because if you are in the public arena and have the opportunity, then why not shout out your opinions. But yeah, it can get a little patronising and annoying at times
