The grammer and spelling in so many questions and answers on Yahoo Answers is appalling. Is this a harbinger of proper English's demise, or just a phase that we will eventually grow out of?

Hello! There is a very nice quotation made by Horace and I would need its translation into LATIN.
'When Greece had been enslaved she made a slave of her rough conqueror and introduced the arts into an uncultivated Latium [the province of Rome, present-day Lazio]

Does anyone know the translation?
Thanks a lot! :D

I'm looking to study or work abroad in a few years and am in the process of figuring out where I want to go. Initially it was going to be Germany, because I love everything about the country and language and am fairly proficient in German, looking to improve greatly.

However, I am also interested in learning French. And so I was wondering, is there anywhere I can go where I can improve my French (after having learned the basics beforehand) while at the same time being able to improve German? I know that 2 of the 4 official languages of Switzerland are German and French. So I have a few concerns.

1. I'm learning "high German" or hochdeutsch, is this spoken in Switz. or is it mostly dialects?
2. Same thing with french, but I don't know the proper term for the official language one would learn in school.
3. Is there anywhere in Switzerland (or any other country, for that matter) where both are spoken fairly commonly?

Thanks

Does anyone remember the Martini advert where at the end the girls dress starts to unravel when she is walking? Well I have to describe the advert and think of a possible ending for it in Italian.

Any nice phrases or good advertising language that I could slip into my essay?

I had just started reading book, called Gothic short stories, and i was so deep in the reading that i didnt' realise where I was going. I used to walk when I was reading, going around trough the grove near my grandparent's house. The story I was reading is called " the fall of house of usher" by edgar allan poe.In this story the protagonist was spending his holiday in the haouse of Usher with his friend Roderick Usher. I read: ( The protagonist is reading)

" And now the corageus Ethelred began to break down the door with his stick. As he hit the door, the wood cracked a part and the sound could be heard throughout the forrest"

At the end of this sentence I started because I thought that I heard from some remote part of tha maison a sound just like the sound described in the book. Pheraps, thought , it was just the sound of the wind, and so I continued the story...
