"To learn by road."

Is it only used in one dialect/variety of English; American, Scottish, Br English or another?

Is it used only by middle aged men?

Does it mean what I think it means? (To learn something by doing it.)

My husband swears that in English each noun is assigned a gender, much like French. He states the cars are feminine. I think that men call cars "she" as a term of affection for their hobby.

With the pronunciations? I recently went to Paris, using a book with some French phrases, but even though my pronunciation was okay, they had trouble understanding me in some areas.
Mostly I just need to know greetings, how to order food in a restaurant, and phrases that are useful in hotels. If including some slang is desired, that's fine too. I just know I'm going to Paris again at least twice this year, so I want to make sure I can speak the right dialect of French.

I wrote this article and it needs some twiking. Please help?

Moreira, born in 1985 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is a Brazilian model best known for his photoshoot for Terra's The Boy.

His very first modeling job was working as a runway model at Sao Paulo Fashion Week. In just a few months, he appeared in several magazines including Drops, and Circulates magazines among others.

Moreira is , without a doubt, one of the most popular "The Boy" model photographed by Cristiano. Fashion observers, photographers and internet readers all fell in love with him instantly.

Besides his mass exposure with "The Boy", Moreira is now a major force in editorials, and campaigns. In fact, he recently appeared on the Levi's MoonBathing ad campaign shot in São Paulo by Klaus Thymann, and was just shot by renowned photographer Steven Klein for D&G and modeled for L'Equipe, Claro cell phones and most notably, graced the pages of Vogue Magazine.

Hey everyone! I'm possibly going to work in a Spanish-Speaking community, Spanish being my second language. I've been a Spanish student for over 10 years and I graduated with it, but I think my Spanish might be very 'school' formal if you know what I mean...

I'm looking to verify some phrases and see if perhaps there's a more common way to say it?

I'll be working with a community from Central and South America, not Spain.

How can I help you?
Como puedo ayudarle(te)?

What are you looking for?
Que tipo de libro estas buscando (mirando) (How exactly would you phrase this?)

Let me help you.
Me permites a ayudarte.

Any other useful phrases you can think of? I'll be working in a library.

If the world were all mine
From the sea to the Rhine
This I would starve myself of
To have regina
Lie in my arms.

That's an edited translation of Were diu werlt alle min, a song from the Carmina Burana- a German collection of poetry and songs. The text was edited slightly to read "daz diu regina" (to have regina) instead of "daz diu chünegin von Engellant" (to have the Queen of England) lie in my arms.

It should now read thus:

If the world were all mine
From the sea to the Rhine
This I would starve myself of
To have the [something]
Lie in my arms.

What title could [something] be?
