Why do we say "double U." Three syllables to pronounce one letter (two for some people!). I think it's a stupid pronounciation. Anyone agree?
Same with the letter "Y" in European languages.

I would like to learn to converse with Indo-Americans, or be able to understand Bollywood movies. Something a bit generic, that if I were to travel there, I wouldn't be completely lost. I know there are tons of dialects, but a good jumping off point would be nice.

So I went to my mandarin class which is an advanced conversational class....this morning and I sat in class for 4 hours and couldn't understand anything. My mandarin teacher speaks very little english and I was lost...It was like I was hearing gibberish. I understood the main part of the text ..what the topic was..but I was completely lost...It was like I was listening to a language that I had never heard before..I've been studying mandarin for years.....Has this ever happened to anyone else? ..I've had classes where I momentarily 'blanked out"--(you may have to be learning a new language to understand what I mean) where I couldn't understand anything for a few sentences..because I missed a key word or something..but that is nothing like what happened today..It was like I just couldn't turn on part of my brain..Anybody out there understand? had the same experience? learning any language--even english?

I am foreign student in America, My professor assign a homework like below:

Hi 601 Class: Here is the first problem list: 1.1 through 1.8, 1.10 through 1.11(minus 1.11(C)), 1.13 through 1.26, 1.29. Also, attached is a problem about sigma-algebras (part (D) is a problem that is doable, at least asymptotic, I think, but as said, do not try this at home! Foreign students: ask American students about the phrase: ``Do not try this at home!'')

I can't figure out the meaning of the last phrase "Do not try this at home!". Is it just a joke? Is there anyone who can explain that to me? Thanks a lot.
