I am foreign student in America, My professor assign a homework like below:

Hi 601 Class: Here is the first problem list: 1.1 through 1.8, 1.10 through 1.11(minus 1.11(C)), 1.13 through 1.26, 1.29. Also, attached is a problem about sigma-algebras (part (D) is a problem that is doable, at least asymptotic, I think, but as said, do not try this at home! Foreign students: ask American students about the phrase: ``Do not try this at home!'')

I can't figure out the meaning of the last phrase "Do not try this at home!". Is it just a joke? Is there anyone who can explain that to me? Thanks a lot.

basically.... it means there is some sort of danger involved....with whatever is being done, for the viewer to try at home.

insurance purposes mainly, is why they say this,,,,, when some idiot trys to jump the grand canyon on a moped, after watching a televised stunt of something similar at home on their TV,,,, and breaks their neck.

when he trys to sue over injury,,,,, he has nothing, because of the fact, it was verbally advised, "do not try this at home".......
there ya have it.

It is a North American idiom. It has a heightened sense of irony through its frequent use on the popular tv show Late Night With David Letterman through many years.

It's mostly a joke.

It comes from many TV shows and stunt exhibitions, where it is used as a standard disclaimer to remind people that certain actions are dangerous. "These people are professionals. Don't try this at home".

Don't worry, it's not meant for you. It's for those 10-year olds who immitate everything they see on TV. If you're over 13, pay no attention to them.
