I would like to learn to converse with Indo-Americans, or be able to understand Bollywood movies. Something a bit generic, that if I were to travel there, I wouldn't be completely lost. I know there are tons of dialects, but a good jumping off point would be nice.

Well, Hindi is the best language to start learning. That's the (un)official language of the Indian community. No matter what type of Indian they are (Gujarati, Marathi, Malu, etc) Hindi is the one language they all understand.

There are programming softwares that teach Hindi (like the Rosetta Series) or books. Pick one up and learn. You can also google Hindi tutorials.

Hindi is used in Bollywood movies and Punjabi usage is also used sometimes.

If you can master HIndi? YOu will have no problem conversing with Pakistanis, North Indians- Even some South Indians , Bangladeshi and Nepalese.

Hindi is easy to learn because it an Indo European Language related to Urdu, Persian, German and other Indo European Language.

I would try the library, and the Internet.. and even try watching the old movies and see if you can find them with subtitles, and watch them over and over till you can get used to the words.. that is how many people who come to the states learn to speak English.. or see if you can find a dictionary that is Asian and English both, and learn it that way too.. many travelers have those dictionary's for that very purpose..
