THERE EXIST MANY SPOKEN LANGUAGES BECAUSE GOD DECIDED TO. ACCORDING WITH GENESIS 11. JEHOVA CONFUSED THE LANGUAGED OF ALL MEN IN EARTH SO THEY WON'T ACCOMPLISH THE GOAL OF CONSTRUCTING A TOWER. THESE MEN WANTED TO CREATE A TOWER THAT WOULD REACHED THE HEAVEN THUS SEE WHAT THERE IS IN HEAVEN. GOD PURPOSES ARE SOLEMLY AND HE DECIDED TO CHANGED THEIR LAGUAGES SO THEY WOULDN'T FINISH THIS CREATION. NOT UNDESTANDING WHAT PEOPLE TELL YOU TO DO IS VERY DIFFICULT TO ACCOMPLISH THE TOWER; HOWEVER I BELIEVE THAT THEY WOULD HAVE CONQUERED THAT GOAL, BECAUSE WHY GOD DIDN'T LET THEM FINISH IT? FOR MORE INFORMATION READ GENESIS 11 ( GENESIS THE FIRST BOOK OF THE BIBLE, BIBLE THE MOST SOLD BOOK IN THE ENTIRE WORLD) MORE THAN 13334 LANGUAGES DIALECT ETC.

I would have to say I believe so because I believe the world used to speak one language (possibly Aramaic), but God's decision to confuse the tongues of the builders of the Tower of Babel in Mesopotamia may have been the cause. Glad you know the story :)

Language evolved about 100,000 years ago in Africa with the evolution of Homo sapiens sapiens, fully modern man. As groups of people who speak the same language separate into different groups, their common language changes in different directions over time. In as little as 200 years, the two languages can become unintelligible to each other without contact. Language change is just a natural part of language, each generation speaks the language differently than the preceding generation. As humans spread across the globe, their languages continued to change and diversify until today we have about 6000 languages spoken across the globe.
The Tower of Babel story is a myth. Myths are the inventions of prescientific peoples to explain what they could not otherwise explain. Today, the science of linguistics has enlightened us about the origins of linguistic diversity.

Not to get into a religious debate, but you have to realize that there are so many different languages due to cultural differences across the planet. Just in the USA alone, there are at least 30 different types of American English spoken. In China, there are over 600 different versions of Chinese spoken across the different provinces. Then you have to keep in mind all of the slang words that come along from the different cultures.

No. There are actually fewer languages every day.
There were so many because we were separated by geographies and dialects grew into languages.

I doubt that. But consider how people isolate themselves in their small family groups even today. Fear of change. Fear of loosing their culture. Fear of losing family. and it is not easy to learn a new language. Then multiply that to each ethnic group.
