The snakes he drove out of Ireland were in fact Pagans. The snake was sacred to Brigid, a Pagan goddess, thus the metaphor. And no "self-respecting" Catholic would admit to letting a Pagan practice their beliefs out in the open, thus the reasoning for driving them out.

So should a Pagan celebrate an anti-Pagan holiday based on that info? Or is it just a day to party?
