The poster who mentioned the snakes is laboring under a myth about St. Patrick. He did not drive snakes out of Ireland as there were no snakes on the Emerald Isle. It's just a myth. St. Patrick was a Christian religious figure and he is credited with spreading Christianity to the people in Ireland. Actually, there may have been more than one St. Patrick. Gifts? I know of no one in this country anyway (USA) who gives gifts on that day. As for green, it is well represented in the rolling green hills of Ireland, and also a color in the Irish flag.

Saint Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland, supposedly, and to explain the holy trinity(3 persons in one devine god) he used a shamrock which has 3 leaves on each stem, and of course Shamrock is green and that's where the green theme comes from.

It's an Irish thing, and unofficial holiday or excuse if you will to celebrate. If you have ever seen an Irishman the day after St. Patrick's day, you will know where the "green" comes from.

We celebrate this holiday in honor of Saint Patrick, who drove all the snales out of Ireland. And to the best of my knowledge, the holiday is represented with the color green because it's a holiday from the Emerald Isle.
