I guess I want details. Where did it start? Why do you celebrate? What do you do?

We do it in France. Never heard of it done elsewhere, but I could be wrong. It's called "Mardi Gras", and kids usually dress up in schools and walk around the village/the area (we used to go to an hospice in my village - old people were happy to see us all dressed up). As you get older, you just eat pancakes on that day, and we love it! Miam miam!

I just checked on the French Wikipedia. Actually, I had forgotten they did it in New Orleans. Don't know if they do pancakes, though.

According to Wiki, it's a catholic day which celebrates the end of the week during which people ate a lot. On the 8th day, the Wednesday, people start fasting.

Actually, there is a way better explanation of it on the English Wiki:

I didn't remembeur it was a catholic celebration! I always thought it was just a day when we ate "crêpes"!!!
