From the Texan Republican Party Platform for 2004.

Homosexuality-- The party believes that the practice of sodomy tears at the fabric of society, contributes to the breakdown of the family unit and leads to the spread of dangerous communicable diseases.

Homosexual behavior is contrary to the fundamental, unchanging truths that have been ordained by God, recognized by our country’s founders and shared by the majority of Texans.

Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable “alternative” lifestyle in our public education and policy, nor should “family” be redefined to include homosexual “couples”.

We are opposed to any granting of special legal entitlements, recognition of privileges including, but not limited to, marriage between persons of the same sex, custody of children by homosexuals, homosexual partner insurance or retirement benefits.

We oppose criminal penalties or civil penalties against those who oppose homosexuality out of faith, conviction, or belief in traditional values.

We all know we're overdoing it. We drive cars with three times as much horsepower than they need to have, and drive them as if there was a trophy to be had. We heat like there's no tomorrow, we put out heaps of trash, we buy cheap stuff we know was manufactured using toxins in sweat shops, we buy the cheapest possible groceries even though they are covered in pesticides, and we applaud the development of GM foods and dubious pharma products. We know we're going to hell in a hand basket at this rate. We even know what it would take to avoid it, whom are we kidding? But if it came down to it, and policies were devised to ensure some restraint to make sure we don't find ourselves dry turkey one day, would you participate willingly? When I'm reading some of the postings' responses here, I can't help but feel that there is a hackle-raising lack of responsible people out there. Or are they all just kidding?

You're at the local convenience store making a purchase using your atm/debit/credit card and the genius behind the counter feels it is necessary to direct you in pushing the correct buttons to complete the transaction, as if you have never taken this same action before?
DRIVES ME BATSHI*T.... how bout you?

I've started informing these people that I have raised two children, hold down a good job and actually drove myself to their store and am pretty goddamn sure I can figure out the machine without guidance. They don't seem to like it very much, but at least I'm cutting down on repeat offenders.

Has anyone hear any urban legends recently? The most recent one we had in sunny old england was the one about the grateful terrorist? Where someone finds a wallet returns it to its owner and he warns them to stay away from somewhere because of a bomb etc?

I see both questions and answers here that say horrible things like fat people should be banned from restaurants and we should take away their cars so they can get more exercise. I see a lot of hate and downright cruel words spewing from people's mouths about fellow human beings who already feel bad about how they look and the physical difficulties associated with being overweight. No one wants to be fat and it's a constant struggle for them without people making them feel worse for it.

If some of these things were said about a person's race or religion, more people would be outraged. What makes people feel it's ok to bash someone for another's difficulties with food and why is it more tolerable than other kinds of discrimination?

I want real, serious answers please.

Do you also get the feeling that much of the trouble we are wading through would be non-existent if there weren't old issues of an imaginary nature we try to come to grips with? What would be the first thing we'd have to erase from our historical memories to be able to have something resembling world peace?
